In April, a Volkswagen Jetta careened off the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and crashed into Queens storefronts. Passenger Beatriz Rodriguez died from her injuries while driver Alexander Palacio's arm was amputated. Now Palacio, who was charged with unlicensed driving, is suing the city.

Commuters Gripe About Dark Knight Rises Traffic Chaos
This weekend, The Dark Knight Rises continued its filmic assault on NYC by taking over the upper span of the 59th Street Bridge. Not everyone was thrilled to have Batman and Bane battling in their backyard though—the filming caused massive traffic jams today. “Right now I don’t want to watch that movie,” one driver complained to CBS. “It’s getting outrageous here in New York. All their filming, all this ridiculous filming and we aren’t getting anything for it,” another driver said.
The Dark Knight Rises Over The 59th Street Bridge This Weekend
Last weekend, thousands of extras spread out near Wall Street to film some epic battle scenes for obscure indie film The Dark Knight Rises. There was gunfire, batwings and appearances from most of the movies' stars—and it seems we're in store for another dose of Batman-ing this weekend. The film will be shooting on the upper level of the span of the 59th Street Bridge until 8 p.m. tonight. It will also be closed for filming tomorrow as well, between 1 a.m. and 8 p.m.
[UPDATE] Queensboro Bridge Is Now The Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge
[UPDATE BELOW] In December the Bloomberg administration announced plans to rename the Queensboro Bridge after former mayor Ed Koch. Koch was for it, Vallone wasn't, and today the City Council will vote to determine whether the name will be official. But not if Queens' Philip Tatel has anything to say about it!
Ed Koch On The Koch/Queensboro Bridge
We've heard from a lot of people about the possibility of renaming the Queensboro Bridge after former Mayor Ed Koch. And now Koch himself is chiming in again. When asked what he thought of the plan, he told the Daily News, "The City Council will decide the issue. I am hopeful the outcome will be positive, G-d willing." However, Vallone suggested that the city instead renamed Gracie Mansion for the former mayor. He did actually live there!
Vallone Agrees "Koch Bridge" Is A Bad Idea
A few months ago the Bloomberg administration announced plans to rename the Queensboro bridge after former Mayor Ed Koch, and reactions ranged from apathetic to downright disgusted. The renaming still requires approval by City Council, Queens member Peter Vallone Jr. will not be voting yes. He recently said, “Mayor Ed Koch is truly a great man and deserving of an honor like this, but renaming a landmark so closely linked to our borough’s culture and history is not appropriate. The city would not rename the Brooklyn Bridge and the Queensboro Bridge should be treated equally.” We couldn't agree more.
Queensboro Cyclist Attack: "His Face Was Shattered"
Cyclist Joel Custer is recovering at Cornell Hospital after he was attacked by a half-naked elderly man while biking over the Queensboro bridge yesterday morning. He lost a few teeth and suffered a split lip and possibly a broken jaw that he underwent emergency surgery for yesterday. One reader painted a portrait of the scene which made it sound even worse than that:
Justin Bieber Holds Secret Concert, Hearts Throb
Justin Bieber mania continues to sweep the city as his Twitter followers got a nice surprise last night: a secret show in Queens! After his "Today" show set, which NBC producer Melissa Lonne called "one of the biggest concerts we've had in our 15-year history," he reportedly took to Twitter to announce a secret show he was holding under the 59th Street Bridge. And sure, 800 fans got to swoon over her perfectly manicured coif, but how many hearts did he have to break along the way?
Happy 100th Birthday, Queensboro Bridge
It's Queensboro Bridge celebration time! The East River crossing between Manhattan and Queens turns 100 today, and there have been a number of events today, which will be capped off by some Fireworks by Grucci at 9:15 p.m. According to the Centennial Events page, they will be set off "from the tip of Roosevelt Island" and will be "viewable from the FDR Drive Promenade and Pavilion Park in Manhattan; Roosevelt Island, in Queens at Gantry Park, and Water Taxi Park and the Greenpoint and Williamsburg waterfront in Brooklyn." There are more events this week and might we remind you of Nick Carraway's declaration in The Great Gatsby, when he and Jay Gatsby head into the city over the bridge, "The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world."
Queensboro Bridge Turns 100
The rarely hailed Queensboro Bridge is about to have its shining moment. The structure is turning 100 years old this year with a series of celebratory events. The Daily News reports that before the bridge was built in 1909, "Queens was mostly a rural gateway to the farms and manors of Long Island," with the exception being the more industrial area of Long Island City. Judith Berdy, president of the Roosevelt Island Historical Society, told the paper, "This bridge made the borough of Queens."
