Have You Seen The Giant Video Billboard At Columbus Circle?

Have you ever wanted to race Ryan Hall? Because now you can. The MTA has replaced the mouthy corridor of horror ads that previously graced the underground walkway from 57th Street to Columbus Circle with a 60' foot long, 26 panel video screen ad for Asics that stars the first U.S. runner to break the one-hour barrier in the half marathon. Sure, there was once plans for the corridor now dominated by Asics to have retail in it—but advertising money is presumably better for the MTA than no money, right? more ›

1901 Subway Mosaic Unearthed

Under a decorative plaque by Grueby Faience in the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station, you can spot an old tile mosaic if you look carefully enough. Yesterday the NY Times noted the find, but said "it's unclear whether it is a true mosaic, with individual tiles, or a mosaic pattern stamped on to a large surface." We consulted Drew Wrzesniewski, a mosaic artist at Mixed Up Mosaics, and he told us, "From what i can see of it, it looks like a tile mosaic with individually cut pieces. It's difficult to tell from the picture if they are hand cut or not though." more ›

But Melissa, who does some freelance photography work for magazines, says that as soon as the dog's owner spotted her with her camera out, he began screaming at her. She tells us that he called her "a bitch (among other things)" and writes that his verbal assault was "a maniacal tirade so big that people passing were telling him to shut up." more ›

Sol LeWitt Celebrated Underground

Sol LeWitt Celebrated Underground

The 59th Street-Columbus Circle station just got more colorful thanks to a Sol LeWitt installation, in honor of what would have been the artist's 82nd birthday. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced its completion today, and said, "The artist created the proposal in 2004, and he selected the site, which is an expansive wall facing a double wide stairway and landing at 60th Street that leads from the mezzanine to the A, B, C, D and 1 trains. Titled 'Whirls and twirls (MTA),' the artwork is 53 feet wide by 11 feet high and consists of 250 porcelain tiles, in six colors, each cut to meet the artist’s specifications." more ›
