Hey, to all the 2 train riders who think their commutes suck most—you have some statistical proof now! The Straphangers Campaign released a study of the nearly 5,000 alerts the MTA issued last year and found that the 2 train had the "most controllable significant incidents in 2011."
2, 5 Trains Had Most "Controllable" Delays, According To Study Of MTA Alerts
Video: Armed Man Hijacks Subway Train
An emotionally disturbed man wielding a screwdriver allegedly climbed through the window of a 5 train motorman's cab in the Bronx on Friday afternoon and ordered the motorman to drive the train or be killed. Motorman Darryl George, 36, tells the Daily News he heard sounds of a disturbance while the crowded train was in the 149th Street station and "opened my window to see what the situation was. He said someone with a gun was trying to kill him." When George turned to radio a supervisor, Richard Arrocho, 42, clambered through the window.
Pepper Spray Incident On 5 Train Sickens Subway Riders
Yesterday evening, we received a tip about the Lexington Avenue subway line at 59th Street, "5 train gas scare at about 6:15. I followed a mob of passengers waiting on the platform as they ran out of the station yelling and holding their noses. I couldn't get an answer out of anyone that made sense." Well, it turns out a woman used her pepper spray on the train—which then sickened her fellow passengers.
Teen Hit By Subway Train May Have Been Running In Station
An 18-year-old aspiring chef was struck in the head by an oncoming downtown express train at the Union Square subway station yesterday morning. Adrian Rodriguez, who suffered a serious head injury and is currently at Bellevue, was apparently on his way to Marta Valle High School, where a school staffer said, "He's never late, and I know he was just trying to get to school on time. He was always on time—100 percent." And according to one report, he may have been running in the station.
Man Struck By Subway At Union Square Station Platform
DNAinfo has a photograph of blood on the platform and reports, "The man, who was not identified, was knocked unconscious onto the platform, according to an MTA worker at the scene. The worker said the injured man looked like he was in his 20s."
Going Down, Uptown: Extreme Bad Subway Behavior
We can't stand it when people eat their takeout on the subway, but this takes it to another level: This extremely NSFW video appears to depict a man pleasuring a woman on an uptown 5 train—here's a link to the video (NSFW!!). Our tipster tells us the footage was taken at 11 p.m. on Tuesday—and, yes, you can see other people taking photos or video footage. We can just imagine what Subway Douchery would say about all this.
Bronx 5 Train Express Service Halted For Repairs
The MTA has announced that starting at the end of the month through August 2011, 5 train service in the Bronx will be shut down for the East 180th Street signal modernization project. From March 27th onwards, express riders will have to endure seven more stops between East 180 Street and 3 Ave-149 Street.
Woman Stuck Between Platform And Train At Borough Hall
Brooklyn-bound 4 and 5 trains were halted at the Bowling Green station this afternoon when a woman got stuck between the platform and the train in Borough Hall. An MTA Transit spokeswoman told Gothamist that "a customer slipped and they got their leg wedged between the train." The incident occurred at some time before 5:45 pm and rescuers turned off the power on the line so they could extricate the woman. She was rescued and service resumed at 6:03 pm, according to the spokeswoman.
Person Pinned By Train At Union Square Subway Station
The MTA's website says "a police investigation at the 14th Street-Union Square" had caused Woodlawn-bound 4 and Pelham Bay Park-bound 5 trains" to run "local from the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station to the 42nd Street-Grand Central Station" (4/5 express service has since resumed, but with delays). According to some initial reports, the investigation was because a man was pinned by a northbound express train.
Fallen Power Line At Wall Street Delays 4/5 Subway Service
Some morning subway commute madness: A downed power line has caused problems with the 4 and 5 subway lines. According to initial reports, a subway entering the Wall Street station hit a low hanging power line. The wires sparked and fell next to the train car. The train's passengers need to be evacuated, but power needs to be cut off first. Additionally, when the wire fell, smoke filled the station, which was also evacuated. Here's the MTA's alert: "Due to hanging cables at the Wall Street Station, there is no 4 and 5 train service between the Nevins Street Station and the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station in both directions. Please expect delays in 4 and 5 train service at this time."
Cops Arrest Repeat Sex Offender On Subway
A good, if gross story about the police nabbing a serial pervert yesterday. According to the AP, the police arrested Darrel Corian "on charges of persistent sexual abuse and forcible touching." At around 9:05 a.m., police officers Michelangelo Hidalgo and Amauris Santana, who were on plainclothes assignment (part of the Anti-Crime patrol), observed Corrian acting suspiciously on the southbound platform of the 42nd Street-Lexington station at Grand Central. They followed him onto a 5 train. "Police say officers caught him rubbing his exposed penis up against at 19-year-old woman's backside, and arrested him." What's more, he had been paroled just two weeks ago "after serving time for persistent sexual abuse and was supposed to stay off buses and subways." Last month, a suspected subway perv with a long rap sheet was arrested with the help of his victim's cellphone photo of him.
Lexington Avenue Commuters Can't Even Board Trains
A new study put out by City Councilman Daniel Garodnick hopes to save east side trains in Manhattan from suffering the ax that is likely coming to various lines around the city. The survey of the Lexington Avenue lines at rush hour discovered "130 riders kept off of each downtown 6 train at 77th Street during morning rush, ...on two days, the number was over 400." The MTA says that with trains running every two minutes during rush hours, there isn't much more they can do. The only relief they offer up is the building of the 2nd Avenue line--scheduled to open in 2015. Garodnick also highlighted how many passengers get stranded on platforms during weekday home games at Yankee Stadium and called for more bus lines to the Bronx. The MTA thinks that burden should be alleviated by the opening of a Metro-North station near the stadium next spring.
Expect Extensive Delays on the 4, 5, 6 Lines...Or Not?
Due an "incident with a forklift at the Westchester Yard," the MTA says riders should be prepared for "extensive delays in service on the 4, 5 and 6 trains at this time." What kind of incident, you ask? Well, according to WNBC, "The forklift hit and damaged the third rail preventing trains from getting out of the yard for the afternoon rush hour." Oh, crap. Update: WABC 7 says everything's back to normal, but as of 5:16 p.m., the MTA's website still says there may be delays. Intrepid straphangers, let us know how it goes!
