Video: "Explosion" Stranded Hundreds Of 4 Train Passengers Last Night

Last night, NYCT Subway Scoop Tweeted, "#ServAdv: Downtown #4 turning at Bowling Green due to a smoke condition. Expect delays" For the over 400 riders on that 4 train, it turned into an unnerving experience. Our own James Thilman was on the train at 9:30 p.m. and says it "suddenly stopped between Bowling Green and Borough Hall. Quickly filled with smoke, people got a little jumpy (only a few screamers). We sat for well over an hour and were then transferred to another train and sent back to Bowling Green," which is where many people decided to give up on the MTA for the evening. more ›

The second attack came on September 12, at about 3:55 p.m., on the southbound 4 train near Mount Eden Avenue, when the suspect approached an 18-year-old woman and slashed her in the face before escaping. more ›

Man Crushed By Subway Platform Is Suing For $15 Million

Last December Michael Dion found himself in an awkward position, to put it mildly. He was stuck for half-an-hour between a 4 train and the extendable platform at Union Square. The incident left the 41-year-old in the hospital for nearly a month with fractures to both sides of his pelvis and internal damage to nearly all of his abdominal organs. So naturally he's now suing the MTA and NYCT for $15 million dollars. more ›

MTA Says Lil Chooch Never Took Control of the 4 Train

The 4 train conductor and train operator who were caught allowing a 9-year-old boy into the train's operating car were apparently done in by the same culprit that many New Yorkers have fallen to—a little mishap involving some broken glasses. After initial suspensions, the MTA completed their investigation into the incident last month where a passenger heard the 4 train's announcements sounding a little squeakier than usual, only to be flabbergasted by the sight of the youngster emerging from the operating car. And while the MTA's look into the incident did discover that the boy was in fact in the area that is most definitely off-limits, neither of the two employees who allowed it were fired when it was confirmed that he did not actually operate the train. more ›

Fallen Power Line At Wall Street Delays 4/5 Subway Service

Some morning subway commute madness: A downed power line has caused problems with the 4 and 5 subway lines. According to initial reports, a subway entering the Wall Street station hit a low hanging power line. The wires sparked and fell next to the train car. The train's passengers need to be evacuated, but power needs to be cut off first. Additionally, when the wire fell, smoke filled the station, which was also evacuated. Here's the MTA's alert: "Due to hanging cables at the Wall Street Station, there is no 4 and 5 train service between the Nevins Street Station and the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station in both directions. Please expect delays in 4 and 5 train service at this time." more ›

Lexington Avenue Commuters Can't Even Board Trains

Lexington Avenue Commuters Can't Even Board Trains

2008_11_lex.jpgA new study put out by City Councilman Daniel Garodnick hopes to save east side trains in Manhattan from suffering the ax that is likely coming to various lines around the city. The survey of the Lexington Avenue lines at rush hour discovered "130 riders kept off of each downtown 6 train at 77th Street during morning rush, ...on two days, the number was over 400." The MTA says that with trains running every two minutes during rush hours, there isn't much more they can do. The only relief they offer up is the building of the 2nd Avenue line--scheduled to open in 2015. Garodnick also highlighted how many passengers get stranded on platforms during weekday home games at Yankee Stadium and called for more bus lines to the Bronx. The MTA thinks that burden should be alleviated by the opening of a Metro-North station near the stadium next spring. more ›
