| Paul Shambroom, a Minneapolis-based photographer, attended hundreds
of town meetings across the United States between 1999 and 2003.
During this four-year-long project, he photographed the participants
and the rituals of civic power with a large-format panoramic camera. These dramatic pictures resemble staged tableaux -- epic history
paintings recounting the practice of local government on a grand scale.
He concentrated on small towns of 2,000 people or less, and also photographed community groups representing distinct neighborhoods or sections of large urban areas. His goal was to find the governing body in each place that represented the smallest increment of local government. Wednesday, October 20, 6:30 - 8:00 pm Paul Shambroom: Virtual Town Meeting
Apple Store in SoHo |
To coincide with the publication of his new book, Meetings, that documents this project, Shambroom will convene a Virtual Town Meeting at the Apple Store in SoHo. Political bloggers and photobloggers will share their photographs and postings of democracy at work in the virtual community -- an exercise of civil liberties during this politically charged time. Photobloggers presenting will include: Jake Dobkin, Mike Epstein, Rion Nakaya, and Eliot Shepard. Shambroom will discuss his book as well as his photographs of town meetings across the United States, both generously supported by Creative Capital Foundation. The entire event will be webcast on the Internet.
