The Steiner family, which operates a successful film and TV production studio at the Brooklyn Navy Yards, today revealed the renderings for a massive residential tower planned for downtown Brooklyn. It will be called The Hub, and is to be built at 333 Schermerhorn Street, at the intersection of Third Avenue and Flatbush Avenue. Douglas Steiner paid $30 million for the property, and plans to break ground early next year. 80 percent of the rental units will go at market rates—a 1,000-square-foot apartment would rent for $3,333 to $4,166 a month—while 20 percent of the units (144 in all) will be rented as "affordable" units. A rapper who was indicted on drug charges in 2010 and accused of running violent drug gang out of the Gowanus Projects has now been indicted for a murder he tweeted about getting away with. Ronald Herron, a.k.a. Ra Diggs, a.k.a. "The Big Homie," was indicted for three murders, including one that prosecutors say he bragged about on Twitter. Herron's tweets include claims that he once had someone "shot from a hospital bed" and that his team of "niggas will kill for meee." Authorities also say he boasted online about how he "beat a body," allegedly referring to the murder of one Frederick Brooks. "His Tweets were premature," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said today. We just stumbled across this footage of a man baiting and trapping pigeons on Wall Street last week... you know, during our afternoon search for fresh pigeon videos. The uploader, who did an amazing job soundtracking the video with "Free Bird," writes: "The Crocodile Hunter has got nothing on The Pigeon Trapper, as he does a little food shopping on Wall Street in Lower Manhattan." It's safe to say these pigeons are either being trained to race, or have been cooked up, squirrel style by now... what do you think? In December, after a series of embarrassing airport security incidents involving elderly women, Senator Chuck Schumer called on the TSA to implement "passenger advocates" at airports. These advocates would, in theory, be summoned by passengers "to hear their concerns" if they feel they’ve been inappropriately treated by transportation security officers. Schumer says the TSA ignored his request, so now he's kicking it up a notch by introducing legislation that would require the agency to provide passenger advocates. And the complicated position that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has put himself in gets more complicated. Today the New Jersey State Senate voted 24-16 to legalize gay marriage in the Garden State and the bill is expected to pass again in the State Assembly on Thursday. But despite popular support for marriage equality in his state Christie, presumably eying future national elections, has vowed to veto the bill—meaning no gay nups on the Shore just yet. An impromptu football game in the parking lot of a Key Food in Williamsburg ended tragically for a Bronx teenager Saturday night. Edgar Soto, 17, was visiting the neighborhood with his mother to attend a friend's birthday party, and had joined some pals to toss a football around in the parking lot around 11:30 p.m. An NYPD spokesman tells us that he was fatally stabbed in the torso during a confrontation with another group who appeared in the parking lot, located on Grand Street between Lorimer and Leonard. Soto was pronounced dead on arrival at Woodhull hospital. Well, that forecast of snow was a bust, but at least it got cold yesterday. For the first time in nearly three weeks we had a colder than normal day on Sunday. Nine degrees cooler than normal to be exact. The temperature will rebound to just about average today. Look for a high right around 40 degrees under sunny skies this afternoon as the Arctic high that brought us the one day of cold weather is replaced by a milder air mass from the west. There's still a brisk wind so it won't feel like 40 however. Meanwhile, miserably cold weather continues to plague much of Europe.
