NYCTV plays host to just about any New York-centric show worth watching, and Trevor Scotland is at the helm of many of them. Scotland executive produces a handful of the programs, and will even step up as host in the near future. This summer the network celebrates their 5th year, and this week Scotland told us about his shows, his city and that time he stood next to the Mayor at the urinal. What NYCTV...

Even though around 200 people attended the Brooklyn barbecue where one person was killed and four people were injured in gun fire, the Post reports there has been little or no cooperation from witnesses. More chillingly, it's suggested that the fatality, 21-year-old college student Zeanie White, may have been used as a "human shield" by another shooting victim who may have been the real target. Police are offering $12,000 for information leading to an arrest and successful conviction; they urge people to call Crimestoppers at 800-577-TIPS.

Martinez was charged with two runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out six. He gave up two home runs, but this time they came with no one on base. Things looked rosy when he...

McCarren Pool Party, by ryan muir at flickrToday on the Gothamist Newsmap: an amputation on W53rd St. in Manhattan, a vessel in distress off Laguardia Airport in Queens, and a suspicious fire at Westchester and Castle Hill Aves. in the Bronx. Girls Gone Wild sent out a press release promising a video of Spitzer hooker Ashley Alexandra Dupre in "very interesting sexual situations." Crowds were sparse on the first "Piazza Day" on Montague St....

New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene: As of today, the department is now one of the cool new people on MySpace, and it’s looking for friends. The actual profile name is NYC Teen Mindspace, and according to deputy commissioner Dr. David Rosin, the goal is to “reach out to young people where they socialize, in a style they...

The FAA is investigating (it hasn't heard of such an incident yet), and a spokesperson for one of the airlines allegedly involved said the claim from air traffic controllers was "false." However, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association says the incident occurred on Saturday, between two passengers planes on runways perpendicular to each other. According to the...

So take advantage of their munificence by eating free BBQ chicken at their Long Island City oasis Wednesday night – the handout is a reprise of yesterday's fowl philanthropy at WTB: “We had such a good time giving away free BBQ Chicken on Sunday that we are doing it again. We have 3 cases of fresh young chicken (approx 200 1/2 chicken) and we are giving it all away starting about 5pm on Wednesday.” (Entry to the beach is free on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday in July and August.)
Titans of industry are working to find a suitable mayoral candidate in a similar vein as Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to the NY Times. The Times even calls the executives ("some of New York’s most influential business leaders: Martin Lipton, a founding partner of the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; the financier Steven Rattner; and Jerry I. Speyer, chairman of the developer Tishman Speyer") "desperate"--Mayor B ought to feel very flattered that...

Last year the famed club shut down to the disappointment of many, all echoing the "end of an era" sentiment. They originally opened as a roller skating rink and roller disco in the 70s, later transforming into a popular gay dance club. To make matters worse, the word on the street was that a developer would be turning the space, at 515 West 18th Street, into dreaded condos. Now amNewYork has gotten word that rumors of Roxy's untimely end were exaggerated, and "the owners will be appearing before the business license and permits committee of CB4" in an effort to re-open.
What happens when a three-year-old plucks some leaves from a tree branch? Well, if a Parks Department employee is watching, the child's mom gets a summons. WABC 7 reported on this act of arboreal malfeasance: Apparently little Ana Stinner--who "can barely reach even the lowest branch on the tree in question"--grabbed some leaves while playing in Chelsea Waterside Park. Her mother Elaine Stinner says the leaves were from a twig, but a parks officer...

A lone worker inside the St. Mark's Place Pizzanini on Saturday said the joint's "Wine Bar" awning has been up for a couple weeks. But when we requested a couple glasses of Montepulciano to wash down our lasagna slices, he informed us that there was no wine....

Earlier, Brownstoner pointed towards a Benches for Barack Craigslist ad that offers up handmade benches built from Douglas Fir wood. From the $40 price tag, $25 goes to the cost of building the bench, while $15 is donated to the Obama campaign. Brownstoner's post noted that the twosome behind the benches are "neighborhood kids, 18-year-old high school grads Harry Fishbein and Emma Dillon," and that they work out of Harry's basement in Cobble Hill. The benches, which measure 18 inches tall and 48 inches long, are delivered for free and can even show up at your doorstep in two hours! The bench-builders are also branching out into building wooden trash can containers, garden/picnic tables, and (this one's ambitious) sheds!

The media is observing the recent death of influential New York Magazine founder Clay Felker with a predictable avalanche of eulogies. New York has an elegant essay from Tom Wolfe (who also double-dipped his B material for Time), rounded out with a big collective tribute from colleagues and friends ranging from Gore Vidal to Tim Zagat. Elsewhere, Jon Carroll recalls Felker comparing feet with Milton Glaser, Voice theater critic Michael Feingold recounts his discourteous first encounter with Felker, and the Observer has anecdotes from other notables who knew him.
