Chocolate is the New Black

Marie Belle Chocolates
After tackling cupcakes and BBQ, the Times Julia Moskin looks at the new age of chocolate appreciation that includes chocolate flights, chocolate conoisseurship, and interest in chocolates flavored with rose, wasabi, and thyme. chocophile.com owner explains it well, when he says, "Chocolate is a relatively affordable obsession. The most expensive bottle of wine is way out of most people's reach; the most expensive bottle of balsamic vinegar costs more than a thousand dollars. But the most expensive chocolate bar costs only $9."

Count Chocula

The Times also has a handy guide to finding chocolate in NY and online; two are West Village Chocolate Bar and Marie–Belle and a glossary of some of the most wonderful words ever, like ganache, praline, and truffle.

Here at Gothamist, Jake is partial to Marie–Belle's hot chocolate whereas Jen loves the puddingy hot choclate at @SQC.

When I was in NYC last week, I bought a beautiful canister of Marie-Belle hot chocolate mix at Chelsea market. A covetous relative, who shall remain unidentified, snaked it and hid it on the top shelf in his kitchen behind some cans of beans. When I got back to LA I told my husband my sad story. He replaced my can with one twice the size and then made me pudding!

i am SUCH a fan of Chocolate Bar -- the sweet, cute indie guy behind the counter always plays Belle and Sebastien - chocolate and B&S, such a comforting experience in the rain!

fyi.. marie-belle's chocolates are actually made by jacques torres.. a secret he let us in on when we met him recently. not sure about their hot chocolate though.

we even know how they decorate them. jacques' secret is safe with me though...

today calls for mexican hot chocolate with a stick of canela and whipped cream

We visited the new West Elm store in Dumbo as a handy excuse to stop by Jacques Torres to get some hot chocolate on a gloomy day. The hot chocolate there is the best! Plus Jacques himself was talking with customers. We also cruised by the really nice new park on the water around the corner from the shop.

Australian Homemade on St Marks btw 1st and A is really cool too. Not cheap ($12 for 6 pieces) but you get to pick interesting combinations like Ginger and Earl Grey Tea

I recevied a box of chocolates from "Karangis Chocolates" they were out of this world and so fancy they would make gifts..does anyone know where I can get a box? I think they are located in Brooklyn or Manhattan? And I love the Marie Belle "spicy" hot chocolate -- to die for!
