Getting shocked by an electrified manhole isn't just for the winter: Yesterday morning, a Labrador retriever suffered a jolt when he stepped onto a wet manhole cover on Thompson Street. The Daily News reports that John Doran had been walking his 11-year-old dog Socha. When the dog stepped into a puddle, she "Socha let out a series of blood-curdling yelps - and collapsed near the curb." From the News:"I never heard a noise come out... [continue]

Photographs of animals taking a stroll make Gothamist happy, so we must share this great photo from WhatISee, who noticed some African spurred tortoises at the American Museum of Natural History. Mud and Hermes live at the museum and venture in their Upper West Side neighborhood to nosh on some leaves. There are some cool photos here of their shells and people's reactions, but we love that they know to go home.... [continue]

New York Knick Stephon Marbury spoke to Albany's Capital 9 News and expressed his support for his fellow embattled athlete, Michael Vick, who agreed to plead guilty to dogfighting charges earlier this week. Marbury said:"I think it's tough. I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dog fighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors. I think it's tough... [continue]

The AP has this great photograph of a dog named Rocky at the Atlanta Humane Society. The Humane Society explained that Rocky had a #7 Michael Vick t-shirt because the society has been taking donated Vick clothing and using them as rags and bedding. Vick, the star quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges related to running a dogfighting ring at his Virginia home. Vick will appear in court on... [continue]

If you've passed the the Daryl Roth Theatre in Union Square lately, you may have wondered, "What is a Meow Mix Acatemy?" Well, it's simple: Meow Mix is giving cat owners an opportunity to understand their cats better by offering classes about cat behavior! The Meow Mix Acatemy has all sorts of interactive courses to simulate different aspects of cat behavior. For instance, there's Catnapping, Cat-isthenics (rock climbing walls and human-sized scratching areas), Cat... [continue]

What is wrong with people? The director of the Mount Vernon Animal Shelter found three boxes full of kittens (63 of them!!!) on her doorstep. Paula Young believes that the kittens were used as bait during dogfighting in Westchester and possibly the Bronx. She told the Journal News, "It is impossible for one person to have all these kittens, calicos, tabbies, males and females." A few days earlier, animal shelter workers found an older... [continue]

Here is some photographic proof, courtesy of F.Trainer on Flickr. He explains: these little beasts were eating some chicken that workers had carelessly left in the yard....they were not scared of flashlights or camera flashes, strangely however, if i repeated the word "chicken" a few times they would scamper off.... Our theory is that these critters migrated south from Williamsburg once they grew tired of feeding on hipster garbage. If anyone spots a coyote... [continue]

Souvenirs are usually inanimate doodads, so we must update the story of the man who smuggled a pygmy marmoset from Peru under his hat. The monkey attracted attention not from airport screeners in Lima or in Fort Lauderdale (where Spirit Airlines Flight 180 connected) but from passengers on the flight to Laguardia who noticed the monkey hanging from the man's ponytail. Our favorite part of the story is how other passengers apparently asked the man... [continue]

If you see a cat or dog in a "wanted" poster on a bus stop, don't be too surprised. Animal Care & Control of New York City is launching a new advertising campaign featuring mug-shot style pictures of pets along with the reason they are up for adoption. The striking images will appear on phone kiosks, buses and bus shelters. The images are of real animals up for adoption from Animal Care & Control.... [continue]
