Cops Seeks iPhone Thieves Targeting Subway Riders

iPhones are iRresistible: Police released surveillance photos of three people suspected of terrorizing subway riders on the N and R lines by stealing iPhones. Apparently the trio are believed to be behind at least nine robberies since December, with the most recent being on February 8.

According to NY1, "The men have been targeting riders at the 36th and 39th Avenue stations in Long Island City, the Prince Street Station in SoHo and the 23rd Street stop in Flatiron." At times, more than one iPhone-carrying subway riders was targeted on the same train.

Police say the suspects are in their 20's and between 5'10" and six feet tall, weighing between 180 and 200 pounds. Anyone with information about the case is being asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-577-TIPS, by texting TIP577 to CRIMES, or by going to NYPDCrimeStoppers.com.

As i was reading this article, i decided to look at the news map here. Three shootings in less than 2 hours in three predominantly black/hispanic neighborhoods. This is why stop-and-frisk activities are higher in these neighborhoods and why police officers approach the youth in these areas with extra precaution. Think outside the box people.

A few weeks ago as the L train was pulling into 8th Ave a young kid sat directly across from me in an empty car, obviously watching me out of his peripheral. When the train stopped he walked right across the platform into the train that was next to leave. I sometimes use my iphone at 8th Ave since they started the service in that station but I won't be doing that anymore. The email can wait.

Assuming that the criminals prefer to committ their crimes closest to where they live in order to effect escape, might I recommend either Ravenswood or Queensbridge Houses as their destination of choice? Queens hoodlums will transport themselves to Manhattan for choicer pickings, but no one from Manhattan hunts in Long Island City. It's called slumming.
