Accident At WTC Site: Load Falls 40 Stories From Crane, Crushes Truck

Emergency personnel are responding to a construction accident at the World Trade Center site, according to the Office of Emergency Management. Apparently a load fell 40 stories from a crane near Cortlandt and Church Streets—and it looks like the load fell on a truck. We're hearing there may be one victim.

The load, possibly a beam, fell from the under-construction Tower 4, which will be 72-stories. A person in the area Tweeted, "Construction workers pouring out of WTC South site into Zuccotti Park as emergency vehicles are driving into the site. #WTC"

Update: Now the 1 train is suspended in both directions between Chambers and South Ferry. They are going to inspect the train tunnel; it's unclear if they'll need to shut down the R to check that tunnel.

Also, one construction worker was injured but we hear he refused medical attention.

Update 11:15 a.m.: Service for the 1 train has been restored. Construction at the site has been suspended as the investigation continues. The Daily News reports that a cable carrying the load snapped.

Whata bunch of MaLarky... no way they fell 40 stories.. maybe 40 feet.. the damage is way to shallow..  anyone who believes that is as stupid as the editor..  BRAINIACS

  • I will never forget this..

    Never forget..2/17

  • Ah, nothing finer than the Union worker......

  • The only crew that was working yesterday that actually had to stop working was the crew loading the truck. The cables snapped. Those things happen on the job site. My fiancé works at WTC right now and he saw the whole thing. This kind of stuff happens all the time but never make the news. The beams only fell 30-50ft. shit happens.

    Dumb move. Better to document

Agreed, it's a bad move. Always get checked out; injuries aren't always immediately apparent and adrenaline can mask a lot, initially.

Judging by those black "strings" covering the beam and the truck I'm going to guess the cable snapped.

  • Unkle_Bob

And those cables falling or whipping around could easily have decimated quite a few people.

  • Thank god everyone's safe. I heard/felt the crash and it made my heart sink because it didn't sound good

  • Sugarbop
