The Union Square area hasn't been starved for food options in decades, and it isn't likely to anytime soon. Just today the area gets another eatery with the arrival of Tortaria to the corner of 12th Street and University Place. For the hungry tourists and shoppers they've got a slew of Mexican sandwiches available and for thirsty NYU students? Tequila bar, anyone?
The 65-seat quick-serve spot comes from Howard Berke (Caliente Cab Co.), his son and two other thirtysomething investors and features an affordable, accessible menu from executive chef Alejandro Vicuna. What's available? Options range from $7.81 semolina-bread tortas (pulled pork, crispy eggplant and a double-stacked "torta burger" are all options) to tiny taquitos (two for $5.52-$6.43 depending on what is inside) to made-to-order guac ($4.60) and basic salads and soups. Also, spicy French Fries for $2.53!
And beyond the food there is a hefty tequila/anejo and mezcal menu which we'll let you peruse for yourself because, damn, that's a lot of booze.
As for the decor? Yes there is a touch of reclaimed wood, but far less than most newcomers these days. Instead the space is bright, shiny and comfortable with mismatched chairs, hand-painted Mexican floor tiles, metal accents, an open kitchen and a wrap-around bar. In theory the space—which opened today and is aiming to be open from 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. weekends—is supposed to bring to mind a Mexican bodega-style sandwich shop. We can see that.
