Insensitive "I Might Have Tacos" Mayor Still Hasn't Resigned

2012_01_maturo.jpg Two days after telling a TV reporter that he would reach out to the Latino community by maybe having some tacos, East Haven, Connecticut mayor Joe Maturo is still getting criticized. Yesterday, the Hartford Courant called for his resignation in an editorial, "The Mayor Is An Idiot," and today, the NY Times has an editorial, "An Outrage in East Haven," asking for the same.

Four officers from the East Haven police department were arrested by the FBI, and federal authorities say they had violated Latinos' civil rights by "conspir[ing] to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate various members of the East Haven community in violation of their constitutional rights... In some cases, the victims were handcuffed with their hands behind their backs when officers assaulted them." Maturo has essentially supported the department, saying that while the charges were disturbing, they were innocent until proven guilty. When WPIX reporter Mario Diaz asked him, "What are you doing for the Latino community tonight?", Maturo said sarcastically, "I might have tacos when I go home. I'm not quite sure yet."

Maturo, who hasn't resigned, claimed he was giving a flippant response to a flippant question, but numerous people have slammed his ill-considered remarks and an immigration activist group delivered 500 tacos to his office. On the other hand, one Latino resident told the NY Times, "Enough is enough. It was the wrong comment to make. There was never a proper time to make that kind of comment. It was uncalled for, and it’s time to move on."

I can't believe people are defending this guy. His police force is under investigation by the FBI due to alleged civil rights violations against Hispanics and his response is basically the equivalent of "fuck those beaners". Nobody in their right mind should think this guy should have a place in public service, let alone a police force under his control.

Too pc?  Come ON ya'll.  That was not just insensitive; it was offensive.  But then again, maybe you're right.  After all it's just so lovely to see an elected official perpetuate stereotypes of the same minority that is being harassed in his city.  He was just kidding anyway.  Obviously, he isn't racist.  Again, he just supports stereotypes and allows the rights of "Those Hola Chicos" to be stamped on and stamped out.

What is wrong with you people?

I do think people are too sensitive and PC these days.

riiiight, spare me the bullshit, i've lived in the bay for years – just left three months ago.

for every brainwashed yuppie living in lake merritt, temescal, or other isolated enclave there are 582,094,388 section ape gorillias ready to stomp on some honkey ass.

it's always the people sitting in ivory towers, the fucking suburbs, or in some gentrified nabe who are champions of minority rights. too fucking scared to offend their precious pets.

just look at sf proper, the city is 95% white.

    get the fuck outta here.
  • CheLucero
Actually it's not people in ivory towers that defend minority rights, it's people who are educated either by virtue of being a minority and not having the privilege of ignoring the issue, and those educated formally. Only the ignorant do not.
  • Midnight Fapper
The ignorant are those pedantic preachers of theoretical «knowledge» sans any real-world, practical experience. It's quite comical propotents of forced integration only interact darkies from afar, they certainly don't live in their nabes.

I'm sorry, but there is no such thing as 'theoretical knowledge". The true method of knowledge is science. There are several defined methods of knowing. Those are the method of tenacity (one type the ignorant Jared in the video is engaged in), the method of authority, which you and presumably engaged in, the method of a priori also known as rationalism (also what Jared is engaged in) , and finally, empiricism, or scientific methodology. Those are place in order starting with the weakest and most likely to produce false and inaccurate knowledge.

Jared makes both an unsound and invalid argument. His premises are wrong, and then he takes his inaccurate premises and draws conclusions which don't follow, even from his unsupported and false premises. An untested theory is never considered knowledge. Any academic who produces knowledge does so by inference of evidence they generate. Theory is an idea about how the world works. Hypothesis are used to test theories, and experimental hypothesis are individual questions answerable by experimentation. Experimental hypothesis serve to refute (not prove) hypothesis and the broader theory. The knowledge that we have does not support your racist views. It doesn't support the racist views that Jared in the video espouses.Anyone with a freshman level familiarity with the social psychology, cultural and ethnicity literature knows better than to subscribe to this kind of tripe. I've wrote this not for you, because you're obviously a  subscriber solely to the method of tenacity, but rather for anyone else unfortunate enough to come across your comments. Goodbye, troll.

Get off my nuts you filthy floozy.

I always wonder about people like you: so over-the-top obnoxious, sitting at a keyboard.  Big talk.  Unfounded insults.  Completely antisocial.  Are you putting on some kind of persona,  safely anonymous, or are you actually just like this in person?
  • Midnight Fapper
poor uglyamiable suffers from vaginal atrophy, that's why the sex sucks and i cheat on her with my secretary.

    you're late to the party.
  • PrettyAmiable
Totally it, you super successful guy, you. Tell your mom hi for me? I wouldn't call up from the basement just now - it would be awful if you woke her.
  • This guy's comment was not racist, but your's clearly is so good for you.
  • True, it was a stupid and inappropriate comment, but I doubt he actually meant anything buy it. I really don't see why this is still news.
  • I know, those uppity minorities with their "not wanting to be disrespected during a federal investigation into a racist conspiracy."  So whacky, everybody just needs to chill out!  He's not like, a spokesperson for the community or some kind of elected representative or anything!
  • Midnight Fapper
What's the big deal about his comments?
  • He has officers under investigation by the FBI for a racist conspiracy, & his response to questioning about it was to make a racist joke.  Does that clear things up?
  • Midnight Fapper
So what was the racist joke? Do you understand what the word racism means?

You know… the anc, scumbags like julius malema, etc.
  • bushwicknonhipster
I think we all understand what the word racism means, but I can speak for all of us when I say that we truly appreciate your lesson on linguistics.

It seems to me that people are mad at the fact that he defends what can only be described as a totally defense-less act by his department...then when given the chance to try and clear the air a little bit, not only does not, but only makes things worse.

I support resignation.  Even if he's not in fact racist, he's most definitely shown that he's an idiot.
