On February 15th Phil Collins Day will make its triumphant return. Last year a parade in Greenpoint was held in honor of the former Genesis drummer, but as organizer Heather Feather explained to us at the time, the celebration changes each year. This year will mark the 6th ever Phil Collins Day, and she tells us that "plans are in full swing" and details should be solidified soon. For now, they've got their website up, which is currently a little cryptic, reading:
Come confess your own love, obsession, heart break, exploration and degradation of love. Feb 15. Phil Collins Confessional.
We'll update when we find out WHAT THIS MEANS. In the meantime, let's ponder: is it time to give Hall & Oates their own day this year?
UPDATE: Heather Feather tells us, "This year there will be a Phil Collins confessional booth, upon which people will design masks, enter the booth with their secrets in hand, and reveal them to the camera. The confidential footage will be sent to Phil Collins himself, a man who truly understands the trials, tribulations and trueness of love, and puts them to a good beat."

Love the guy. There should be no shame in admitting that at all. He's talented; Genesis was great under his leadership (I've always been a Collins-era fan - Gabriel songs seem to be heavier on content about dragons, vaginas, or dragon vaginas), and the guy sang some unbelievably catchy songs.
It Don't Matter to Me is basically the most fun song ever, with a sick drum part.Wish I was in town for this.
But I also think that Phill Collins works better within the confines of the group than as a solo artist-and I stress the word artist. This is "Sussudio," a great, great song, a personal favorite.

So is Gothamist pushing this just so it can be underground for a few years then when it gets popular they can say it's crap?
I'm surprised someone is not trying to rock out Dolly Parton Day.

Hipster irony or not, I love Phil Collins. There, I said it and now it's out there in the universe.

You get +1 from me then - I might be glad just to have survived the vacuous era he represented once upon a time, but kudos to you for expressing your own taste instead of hiding behind a veneer of snark.....
As for the Phil Phetishists - Love something....create something.....celebrate something.....have a dada parade about nothing/everything.....but enough with the generic sneering for its own sake bland-young-would-be-artist people, please......try a little sincerity for a change...
(unless your objective really IS to get Collins to end his life in which case I might see you at the parade...)

Seriously, irony in the hands of dumb people is really sad. Why go to all the trouble of hunting down a Journey t-shirt when you wear it for the purpose of showing people you would never actually listen to Journey? Life is too short.

As silly as I think this is, I really don't understand why so many of you let this bother you so much. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, hipsters being ridiculous is pretty inconsequential.

If it only honors his solo output and ignores the fact that he was one of the best and most inventive drummers in Rock then it's shit.
AlexTheOriginalPartyDog
Count me out until they celebrate his thespian brilliance in "Buster".

its going to be a bunch of out of towners abusing the neighborhood in an ironic fashion for their own self gratification and live posting it on Facebook.

Yeah, funny how many people forget (or never knew) about his drumming career.
