Park Slope's Southpaw May Be Closing Next Month

southpaw0112.jpeg

Is Park Slope mainstay Southpaw closing in February? According to Brooklyn Vegan, the venue—which opened in 2002—will shut its doors on February 20th. One of the bookers at the club Tweeted, I can't believe I'm writing this. Southpaw will be closing its doors for good Feb. 20th. The venue's been sold." Which currently seems to be the main confirmation.

We've reached out to the owner of Southpaw to get an official confirmation, and to find out more about why they're shutting down operations—we'll update when we hear back.

  • Love The Rub parties every month. Hopefully, they will continue!

Southpaw may not have been booking much indie rock of late but they were still doing well w/ other kinds of music. (And their monthly dance party "The Rub" packed the house w/o fail.) Super convenient to get to--Bell House is in a desolate and, at night, sketchy area--SP has a great staff, sight lines, sound, cover charge, reasonably-priced drinks...This is a kick in the gut for someone like me who enjoyed both performing and watching shows there.

I agree. Can you recommend any other spots in Brooklyn where you can groove to old-school hip-hop till 4 a.m. among an attitude-less crowd?

Great Venue but they have not booked any good acts in years and seem to be unable to market it.
Wonder what it will be next or just new owners

  • 100% agree. Used to see great shows there about once a month... before the Bell House came along.

  • Very sorry to hear this. A great venue indeed.

I liked Southpaw, but they haven't booked a show I've wanted to see for about the last four years. And then other venues opened up in the proximity that did. Coulda been good, shoulda been good.

came here to say that.  they never have bands there that I like.

WTF man, that place is awesome.  As someone who doesn't get out to see music much, the few times I've been at Southpaw have been great.  Are there any other places like this around the Slope?

Bell House, I think 7th or 8th near 3rd Ave.  Gothamist holds events there and it's the spot for secret science club once a month.

  • That stinks :(  I liked this venue.

  • me too. the neighbourhood not so much.
