Muslims Arrested At Rye Playland Melee To File Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit

012512rye.jpg Westchester County prosecutors have agreed to drop charges against 15 Muslims who were arrested at Rye Playland last summer after women visiting the park were told they could not go on certain ride while wearing their hijabs. The chaotic melee started after some Muslim women demanded a refund, and text messages were sent amongst some of the 3,000 Muslims visiting the amusement park with the Muslim American Society of New York. As growing numbers gathered near the park police station, local police rushed to the scene, and the situation quickly escalated, with a park ranger allegedly yelling, "I don't give a f*ck about your culture."

15 people, all Muslims, were arrested. Most were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of governmental administration, but a handful were charged with second-degree assault. Yesterday, they accepted an offer to have the charges dismissed provided they aren't arrested in the coming months. An attorney representing the group, Lamis Deek, says her clients would have won had the case gone to trial, but most of them live in NYC, and she tells the Associated Press, "It’s unfortunately more convenient to accept this offer, not have to enter a plea of guilty, move on with their lives and pursue this matter in a civil courtroom."

Deek tells LoHud.com her clients plan to file federal civil rights lawsuits against Westchester County, claiming that the arrests were "abusive" and that the headgear ban violates the civil rights of the Muslim patrons. Rye Playland is located in a public park operated by the county, at a loss of $5 million a year. Rye Playand's rules are stricter than other amusement parks'. Six Flags in New Jersey, for instance, permits hijabs on rides as long as they are securely wrapped around the head. On the other hand, Six Flags hasn't had a fatal accident since the '80s, and it may be that Rye Playland has tighter safety regulations because of a 2005 incident in which a 7-year-old boy who was killed on a boat ride at the park.

Here's video of the chaotic scene last summer; it shows police pushing at least one Muslim woman to the ground, and over 100 officers responded to the melee, which was sparked by one 17-year-old girl from Brooklyn who refused to comply with the head scarf ban.

"Park ranger"? It's Rye Playland—they're plain old security guards.

  • kaylarue

in fact, they are not. they are hired by the westchester county police. it takes a lot to get that job, so they are not just plain old security guards. can a plain security guard arrest someone? no.

Amusement parks should offer a hat with a chin strap to secure religious headgear, wigs, or bad toupees.  If your combover flies more than 8" away from your scalp in a strong wind then you too must wear the hat.

I remember this case, and also remember that the 17 year old was a stupid pig who was looking for something anti-muslim when there wasnt anything racial or prejudice about it. She was the same piece of shit who then threatened the police and assaulted one of the responding officers. Their demands are moronic and full of garbage.

Its cleary stated on the sign as you walk into the park, that headgear is prohibited from certain rides.  These same people would file a lawsuit when their kids scarf gets caught in the dragon coaster and is decapitated.
Rye Playland has had a number of deaths in the past decade. They are covering their asses

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

It's common sense that you don't wear something on a ride that can fly off or go flying off into someone else's face on get into the equipment. Considering the potential for lawsuits, of course the parks will take every precaution.

  • Roger_the_Shrubber

Stupid woman. The reason you can't wear a headscarf on certain rides is for your own safety.

Too bad they didn't have the balls to keep the charges.

    Celebrate diversity - or else!

What are you, a diabolical headscarf amusement park ranger?
Do you realize most amusement parks in the USA freely acknowledge that it is NOT a safety issue and allow women with headscarfs to ride? No, of course you don't. Please, stop wasting everyone's time with your idiotic comments in support of bigotry.

Muslim woman strangled by her burkha in freak go-kart accident

A young Muslim woman had died after her burkha became snagged in a go-kart.
    The
24-year-old woman, who has not yet been named, died a terrifying death
today when a fluttering part of her burkha became caught in the wheels
of a go-kart she was driving near the town of  Port Stephens, north of
    Sydney.

The Muslim clothing the woman was wearing flew back as she
sped around the track and part of it became entangled in the go-kart's
    wheels.
She was strangled in a second and crashed the vehicle.

    Despite
the efforts of paramedics who rushed to her aid, the neck and throat
injuries she suffered were so severe that doctors were unable to revive
her when she arrived at the John Hunter Hospital in the New South Wales
    city of Newcastle.
The young woman was riding the go-kart at a
popular recreational area known as Bob's Farm, which offers rides of up
to 15 minutes at a time.

Her death is being likened to that
of American dancer Isadora Duncan,  acknowledged as being the creator of
modern dance, and who was famous for the flowing silk carves she liked
    to wear.
But while riding in an open-top car in Nice in
1927, her scarf became  entangled in one of the vehicle's spoked wheels
    and she was strangled.

for someone who hates Muslims so much, you are displaying a great amount of concern for their well being.

Guess what: Accidents happen. It doesn't mean we need to punish everyone when a 1 in a million accident occurs. If we did that, all toys would be banned, all food would be considered a choking hazard and pulled from the shelves, and all amusement park rides would be outlawed (because, yes, accidents have happened). Simply provide a warning sign saying all clothing, including headgear, should be secured for their safety, and that the amusement park is not liable for any accidents as a result of noncompliance with the warning.  That's it. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.
