NYPD Screened Islamophobic Film For Cops On A "Continuous Loop"

012412jihad.jpg Last January investigative journalist Tom Robbins broke the story of how the NYPD endorsed the scaremongering Islamophobic documentary The Third Jihad. The film was funded by the pro-Israel non-profit group The Clarion Fund, and it contends that few, if any, Muslims can be trusted. "Americans are being told that most of the mainstream Muslim groups are moderate," says the narrator, "when in fact if you look a little closer you'll see a very different reality. One of their primary tactics is deception." Newly released documents show the NYPD knows a thing or two about deception as well!

When Robbins's story appeared in the Village Voice, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne initially said no cops had watched what he described as a "wacky movie." Later, he said it had only been shown "a couple of times when officers were filling out paperwork before the actual coursework began. It was not approved for the curriculum. It's not shown for any purpose now." But one officer told the Voice his instructor "introduced it with a warning that some people found it offensive."

And now, after months and months of stonewalling, The Brennan Center for Justice has forced the NYPD to release documents [below] relating to the documentary, and it turns out The Third Jihad was shown "on a continuous loop" during "the sign-in, medical and administrative orientation process." It's unclear how long the loop ran—the Times speculates it was shown for anywhere between three months and one year of training. But internal NYPD documents confirm that the film was screened for 68 lieutenants, 159 sergeants, 31 detectives and 1,231 patrol officers.

The film also includes excerpts from an interview with NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. Browne maintains the interview segments were lifted from a previous interview with Kelly and used without his permission, but the department has no plans to ask The Third Jihad filmmakers to remove it. The NYPD also has no plans to "correct any false impressions the movie might have left behind," the Times reports.

One of the cops who first informed Robbins about the film said at the time, "It was so ridiculously one-sided. It just made Muslims look like the enemy. It was straight propaganda." And Faiza Patel, a director at The Brennan Center, is also disturbed that the NYPD has proved so unwilling to make documents public. "It suggests a broader problem that they refuse to divulge this information much less to discuss it," Patel tells the Times. "The training of the world’s largest city police force is an important question."

  • Don't forget the most recent development, Ray Kelly's staff first denied he was interviewed. The NYPD deputy commissioner first told reporters and NYTimes that even though he was listed as "interviewee" in the film, the producers must have spliced old footage together. The producer of the film sent over copies of the confirmed interview meeting date and time, and suddenly the NYPD recalled that yes, Ray Kelly DID sit down for an interview, but he was misled and was talking about something unrelated. The producer now insists that the topics were clearly laid out beforehand about terrorism, NYC's history of it, and the "threat matrix." Now Ray Kelly's office is saying that yeah that did happen, but NOW he regrets it. (The NYTimes wrote out that he has a bad recollection, I guess the Gray Lady is too polite to use the term "liar")

2 large lies in 24 hours? With that record, he rivals our politicians.

They should be running a loop about the real enemy, Israel, AIPAC, and Josef Lieberman.

We must have our perspective manipulated by the Israeli-made media in order for this to be done unchallenged.
They'll show you a nation of people on the defense from Israelis (impostors BTW) who would appear as innocent people being attacked for no reason, rather than showing the the truth -- Israelis (impostors) crusaders plundering Palestine and stealing their land while twisting the truth to make it appear as a terrorist issue to the minds of the weak who lack reasoning or intellect. "Terrorist - terrorists" "be afraid - be afraid".

Well, it is a terrorist issue, but these terrorists don't have the terrorist image that's been drilled into your heads since 9/11.
Israel and the U.S are the ones you need to dig a little research on.

Pretty similar content to the Anti-Semitic films made by the Nazis in the 30s. Though for some reason there are defenders.

Muslims are the new Blacks. But then we are talking about Kelly here, he lies like a rug.

Is it time to take this ratty old thing out over the balcony and beat it clean yet?
  • Someone with more time on their hands should switch out these soundbites with some Jew or Christian extremists' rhetoric. It's all the same...nonsense. Islamic States of America by 2050? Please. Have these clowns ever been to the South, Midwest, West? Ain't gonna fly in Christian 'Merica. Keep us all afraid and we won't think for ourselves.

Israel entered into a long term big money lobbying relationship with the Christian fundies a long time ago and succeeding in turning that demographic from rabid anti-Semites to the one of the most vociferous allies of aggressive, militaristic, racist Israeli policy. This is big money being used to influence American public opinion from abroad. We see the fruits of it all around us...

What's the point? Where there NYPD officers who are saying, "Islamic terrorism?? PISH! Like that'll happen here!"
  • disturbing, disgusting, and pretty much what i would expect from the NYPD.

Does it matter to the writer that the film features a MUSLIM man expressing his concerns about what he sees happening in the Islamic world?

Can the writer disprove any of the film's claims? If yes, the producers would appreciate factual corrections accompanied by references (objective proof, not opinion).

Do the historical FACTS about Islam matter?

Does Islam's male-based misogynist, homophobic, intolerant, repressive society have an irresistible appeal to those who call themselves "liberal" or "progressive"?
  • Seriously? Neo-Nazis have made anti-Semitic videos like these for decades, also showing interviews with Jews who express their concerns over Jewish extremism and plots.

Even if every item brought up in the film is technically correct, it's distorting of reality and highly misleading. The makers have a clear goal of making you distrust an entire community of millions of people. Your neighbor is not an evil schemer bent on overthrowing America, and these anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish videos both work to make the world a worse and distrustful place. You would think a Jewish person like yourself would be more sensitive about trying to spread fear about a minority considering historical examples.

"Do the historical FACTS about Islam matter?"
Propaganda films that are covered up & not a part of regular training probably arn't all that factual.

Neither are people who start a brand new account who can't even refrain from insulting other people's spiritual beliefs in their first post.
  • luke_1
Oh if a muslim said it... There are no self-hating Jews around either. Sigh.
  • theonlyseven
None of your questions are relevant to the issue at hand here, that being is it even appropriate to show any such kind of  film to a captive audience on a non stop basis.  If police officers are going to be forced to watch television, maybe videos that can teach them how to do their job without shooting unarmed citizens would be more helpful.  There is absolutely no legitimate work related reason for this "film" to be shown to them.

"And a man will choose...any wickedness, but the wickedness
of a woman...Sin began with a woman and thanks to her we all
    must die"

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination"

You're right!  That's horribly homophobic, mysogynistic and intolerant.  Oh, wait, what religion did this come from again?

Get off your high horse and admit you hate someone purely because of what they believe.  No religion can claim superiority when each has atrocities in it's past and hate in it's books.
  • mrnvr
And Judaism isn't homophobic, intolerant,  misogynist and male-based? You really need to spend more time in Williamsburg!

I'm sure not all Jews are orthodox, just like not all muslims are extremists. Of course, I'm not a liberal or a progressive so maybe my opinion is biased.
  • cr17
"I'm sure not all Jews are orthodox" - you're not? Seriously, you don't know if all Jews are orthodox or not? Perhaps this isn't a matter you should be speaking up on.
  • mrnvr
Either you're trolling or being a DB... relational logic.

I'd also like to add that Christianity has some very homophobic undertones but hey... maybe i shouldn't be speaking up on that either :_(

All the abrahamic religions are for fucking retards who are too afraid to think for themselves.

Yeah, there's a super man floating in the sky listening to your pathetic fucking thoughts!  And he totally hates people who don't believe in him, because he is just that narcissistic!

Judaism, Christianity, Islam.  All fucking stupid.
And the more strict or orthodox the strain, the more destructive.
  • randomtransplant
"Yeah, there's a super man floating in the sky listening to your pathetic fucking thoughts! "
Says the commentor on a moderated internet.

The acrimony sounds a little insecure.

  • kevd
Nope.  Totally secure.  Just sick of one band of idiots hating on another band of idiots, all of whom are just as pathetic as each other, in my book.
But thank you for the notes on tone.  Very helpful.
  • FU Boy
So, you admit to being no better than them?  You are, after all, advocating the hatred of others because of that other person's belief...
  • kevd
Not quite sure which failure of logic got you there.
Probably the one which equates pitying someone, or finding someone stupid with hating them.

Which are in no way the same thing.

I think they are stupid for their beliefs, I might even pity them, but I don't hate them.

    Try again Socrates.

    Nice work, NYPD. Real slick.
