Last night, President Obama held a big reelection fundraiser at the Apollo Theater. While there were protesters (more about that later), Obama charmed the crowd and hit a chord when he sang a little of the Rev. Al Green's "Let's Stay Together":

The President warbled, "I'm so in love with you," and explained that some "didn't think I would do it. I told you I was gonna do it... The sandman did not come out." And referring to Green himself, who was at the Apollo, Obama said, "Don't worry Rev, I cannot sing like you, but I just wanted to show my appreciation." Aww.

    More sideshow bullshit.

At least he stopped short of talkin' all "jive" like he did during his speech to the CBC:

He sure knows how to pander!

  • WZA

I would've been more impressed if he sang, 'Born in the USA'.

  • whiteiris

ahahah funny guy. Obama Hussein and Michelle Marie Antoinette  despises the USA.

  • aspiringrapper

How would he have done on the next line?  Doesn't that song get harder to sing as it continues?

  • The audience response when Barry started singing sounded like fawning American Idol fans

  • mattbrooklyn

dammit.  it's hard to be angry with this guy.

That's how Dubya and Clinton were both reelected. On a personal level, they're likable characters, guys who seem like they'd be fun to grab a beer with, and Obama is perhaps even more likable. But as we saw with Dubya and Clinton, charm does not equal competence, and their second terms were disasters, and a second term of Obama wouldn't be any better.

    Whatever. He rocks.

    Nice...

This election is shaping up as 2004 but just the parties are reversed: the challenger is an out-of-touch wealthy socialite from Massachusetts and the incumbent is a "man of the people" (whether he really is or not) who appeals to our sentimentality despite a less-than-enthusiastically received first term whose opposition frantically hates him.

  • And just as in 2004 any legitimate third party candidate will be marginalized and supporters of the 2 main candidates will keep spouting that voting for anyone else will hurt their chosen candidate's chances of winning

  • Gwinny

you mean, the way it hurt Gore in 2000?

  • Yeah exactly that.  It's not like both republicans and democrats have been busted for various kinds of electoral fraud related to the 2000 election.  Oh and if a third party candidate is worthy of a vote especially when an election is painted and/or perceived as the choice of the lesser evil then nobody gets to claim that an alternative candidate stole votes or an election from them.  I am so sick and fucking tired of so many people accepting the bullshit notion that you must choose from one of two parties / candidates - it is a complete scam.

  • RobertMosesSupposesErroneously

Exactly. Plenty of people hate Obama, but nobody's in love with Romney.

Plus, by the time these nasty primaries are over, I don't think any GOP candidate is going to have a shred of dignity or good reputation left.

  • BrassMonkeyBallz

When was the last time there was a GOP candidate with a "shred of dignity or good reputation"?

I guess that question applies to any politician.

  • Fantastic!
Any attempt by the Sandman to take out Prez would have made for a very tense and awkward moment with the Secret Service.
