Bask In Basque Fare At Mercado on Kent, Williamsburg's New Spanish Spot

The Basques have invaded the 'burg! One of the newest flashy restaurants to surface in Williamsburg, Mercado on Kent, aims to bring the foods of Spain's Basque region to Brooklyn with an 80-seat restaurant that also happens to have a bar and a small marketplace and bakery. Fine by us, one really can never have too much Iberico jamon. NEVER.

The kitchen at Mercado is run by chef Peru Almandoz and boasts a menu ranging from small plates and salads to large plates and sandwiches. Everything is very sharable and the options (which you can check out below) range from $8 Iberico ham croquettes to a $26 sharable suckling pig with everything from crab toast ($7) and a $12 pork belly sandwich in between. All the breads (ranging from ciabatta to burger buns) are baked on site by baker Johnny Peralta, who did his time at Balthazar, and the cocktail program by David Olson seems interesting, too. You can see an early cocktail menu below.

As for the space? Its huge (6,000-square feet) and boasts the now-standard communal tables along with banquets, a chefs counter and a zinc-topped bar. Also lots and lots of reclaimed wood, marble and tile as is the style these days. Photographer Katie Sokoler adds, "They gave me some fresh bread from their bakery on the way out and it was amazing! Neeeeeed moooooore."

Criollo 88, You must be someone from the team! That is pathetic! You should leave this space for other people or those from da neightbourhood!

pendejito, esta bien cuando uno de los nuestros puede hacer algo aqui mismo en nuestro vecindario! So I went to eat there last night. It wasn't overly crowded, about 30 people I counted at 8:30. I asked about the chef and they told me his name was Mikel. I asked where he was from and they told me Bilbao which is in the Basque region. I also asked what happened to the other guy and I was told that  he never secured a visa so that was a problem for him to stay. I don't know what his food was like but what I ate yesterday was really good. I'm not as elaborate a critic as most of you but I spoke to people next to me that were there for the 3rd time and had eaten both chefs cooking and they were equally happy with this guy. I will go again.

Hi guys! We live in the neighborhood, and we just wanted to inform that aparently the basque chef Peru Almandoz, refered to in the article, it is not part of the team at Mercado on Kent anymore, which is really a shame. We had the chance to know him and served us a fantastic dinner.  There are comments around, that Mercado is not the same anymore, shame if it is so...we will go back again to confirm it.

Basque Country and Barcelona have nothing to do with eachother!!! Hahahaha what an idiot! It is like saying "New York City food my ass!!! Not what I remember from my numerous trips to Philadelphia...." Get your geography right!!!!!!!!

I haven't been to the place so I can't comment. What I can comment on is how many of you do comment that also haven't been to this or many other places you post comments on.

Pendejito, I'm from the neighborhood. Nacido y criado en NY y PR. Lei que el dueno es latino tambien parte boricua. El tipo es del vecindario so no where to send him, hahahahaha. He's already home it seems.

  • pendejito

Bueno por que la majoria de estos nuevos duenos vienen de afuera. Si es vecino, then more power to him.

  • luke_1

Worse than that. I mean, they speak different frickin' languages.

I went. Basque my ass. Not what I remember as Basque from the many times I visited Barcelona where I imagine they get it much closer to the real thing. And I love it how they asked us if we have reservations, with the entire place completely empty (it's pathetic how places like this just have to "play the part" at all times).

Still, the food was good, and the prices were not higher than elsewhere for the quality and menu offered. Service was fine. What bugs me the most about it is that even though the space is huge, and the ceilings are very high, and the windows are enormous, and they even have skylights so it just gets a ton of daylight (plus a nice view of Domino building).... they are never open at day time, so it's all to waste! These photos taken at daytime are so misleading. Also, I bet it will not be nearly as pleasant inside once it fills with the condo filth.

True kalimotxo is made with cheap red wine and coke. What a travesty.

  • KevinJWalsh

I wish we could have diner food in our remaining diners.

  • Trustafarian

I think the menu looks pretty great.

  • luke_1

I usually scoff at these "new Williamsburg/LES restaurant" postings but I'm actually going to eat here. Decidedly not overpriced and based on the pseudo-academic reading I did on the Basque country over the summer the menu is pretty well put together.

  • Legione13

If the staff is as welcoming as the people in the Basque region of Spain, customers can expect to be scowled at and have the restaurant door slammed in their faces.

Hipsters will stop thinking this place is "cool" in about a month.

  • Why is the style of the times for restaurants these days: make seating as uncomfortable as possible?
This strange Puritan church style is running amok, making chiropractors rich, and probably a contributing factor for the surly hate filled banality going around like the plague these days.
I mean just look at the comments for this simple article - these statements are not "I hate people just like me or maybe completely different from me but are messed up confused human beings just like me," but really
"Damn these booths and chairs I'm sitting on are like torture devices! Does anyone have a fucking cushion or would it kill you to install furniture with upholstery?"

  • Rayski_LaRue

Yet another place for hipsters to say is "amazing". Oh, and "Brilliant". Hipsters and yuppies out! Pendejito for Mayor!
