A Chelsea building manager was arrested today on allegations that he made a series of anti-Semitic phone calls and scrawled hateful messages and symbols on apartment doors in the neighborhood. Two people say David Haddad, 56, made threatening and anti-Semitic phone calls to an 80-year-old Brooklyn woman Brooklyn last month. Investigators also say Haddad, who is "Jewish but not practicing," according to one police source, called an unidentified woman on January 10th and threatened her in her Chelsea apartment building.
In the same building, investigators found racist graffiti on five apartment doors and in the hallway. Police tell the News that Haddad preyed on the women with hateful, threatening phone calls over the next few days, and while his alleged motive is currently unclear, he's being charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime. A police source tells the News Haddad may also be responsible for the spray-painted swastikas and “Die Jews” graffiti found in Midwood this weekend.
