Everyone's favorite Disneyland-on-acid-esque congee emporium, Congee Village (the one on Bowery, not Allen Street), has been shuttered by the Health Department after racking up 55 violation points on a recent visit, reports The Lo-Down.

Notable infractions include evidence of mice and roaches, plus unsanitary food surfaces, some of the same violations the restaurant was cited for in their not-much-better inspection barely two weeks ago. We put in a call to the restaurant and were told, "We're closed today to clean up for the Chinese New Year," which doesn't start until...January 23. [via Eater]

  • They should just rename it Vomit Palace.

    No, that's Per Se...

  • I'm sure the owner will be on here in half an hour to complain how the DOH is just a legalized racket.

They already said it. The place is a VILLAGE, not a PALACE. It's oughta have some roaches and rats. Read the fucking sign.

found a huge staple in my bok choy at allen st. location. YUM!

  • I, and 2 other coworkers got some very pleasant gastroenteritis after a company lunch there right before winter break of '07. So personally, I am shocked.

Yeah, is anyone surprised?  The food and prices are great, but if restroom cleanliness and soap availability are any indication, this place is filthier than the sidewalk.
