Video: Dead Christmas Trees Lynched Under BQE, For Art

Instead of just piling up the dead Christmas tree bodies on the street like so many Romanovs, area artist MIchael Neff has gathered up some of the fallen evergreen soldiers and honored them with a fitting tribute: hanging from the underside of the BQE in Williamsburg. The ingenious installation can be found where Metropolitan Avenue crosses North 6th Street. This is conveniently located not far from Union Pool, making jumping and tackling floating Christmas trees the perfectly ironic end to any evening. Here's video of the trees in action:

On his Flickr page, Neff explains the installation, which is made with trees salvaged from the neighborhood: "I got my friend Isabel to lend me a hand and we collected many more trees and installed them across the full width of the under side of the highway. I have been intending to do an installation piece using the discarded Christmas trees for a number of years now. They begin to crowd the sidewalks of New York City as soon as the day after Christmas and have always felt a bit sad to me." So sad, and so pretty when they BURN.

It doesn't make any sense, but "hung like a Christmas tree" is definitely going to be aired at some point next holiday.

This is great and I wish there were more art installations on this otherwise abused and slightly scary stretch of sidewalk!

JDS, I know you're always desperately trying to be funny, but this casual use of the word "lynched" for the sake of a supposed joke is just wrong. Gothamist has tossed around this word too often in too many stories. It cheapens a term that refers to a very heinous act. Just cut it out.
