Steak 'n Shake Opens Thursday With Free Burgers For A Year For First 150 Customers

jan911steakshake.jpg

The long nightmare of a Steak 'n Shake-free New York is finally drawing to a close this week, with the grand opening of the city's first-ever outlet in Midtown, right next to the Ed Sullivan Theater. And to kick things off, the Midwestern fast food chain is throwing one doozy of a promotion: free burgers for an entire year, for the first 150 customers to show up at the new location.

The restaurant opens at 10 a.m., so we recommend camping out overnight on Wednesday if you take this competition even slightly seriously. Those familiar with the chain already know to expect thin, crispy steakburgers ($2-4), hand-dipped milkshakes ($4) a shoestring-style fries, but the new location will also be debuting a new offering, the "Signature Steakburger," a six ounce organic burger made of hormone and antibiotic-free ribeye and New York strip steak. Oh, and there will be wine and beer to help ease the pain of not getting there early enough to land a year of free fast food.

Steak 'n Shake // 1695 Broadway // no phone yet // open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight

Hell yes. Now we need a Waffle House and we'll be all set.

Can't there be any midwestern chains (besides Wal Mart) that DONT open in NYC? The homogenization of our culture and the five boroughs are already going full steam ahead.

  • I'm proud to say that my Rego Park, Queens neighborhood managed to keep out Walmart.  When they expressed an interest in opening a store here, with a footbridge connecting to Queens' largest mall, residents teamed up with local politicians, and the push forced Walmart to scrap their plans and move on.

It's their way of getting back at NYC for unleashing Snapple on the rest of the country.

Lets ask France to take back the Statue of Liberty & Europe to take back the UN. Screw pizza.

Because all this cosmopolitan "homogenization" sucks so much.

    Its times freaking square. Relax.

  • that's a really stupid analogy.

  • luke_1

You just compared the Statue of Liberty to Steak 'n Shake.

Next to the Letterman studio is perfect for this. Since it's mostly midwestern tourists who goes to see Letterman. Let them get more obese and ignorant.

I'm willing to guess that a typical steak and shake meal has fewer calories than your local diner's 1/2 burger and 6 gallon tub o' fries, but way to be an asshole about it anyway.

  • imadick

eating burgers makes you more ignorant now?

  • No, eating burgers doesn't MAKE you ignorant, it's the ignorance that happens first, and then comes the burger-eating and the shake-drinking.

  • Disciple_of_MrMet

I went to college in the Midwest, and anybody who waits on line to get into this place needs to get their head examined. The burgers are so-so, the fries are too small, the shakes are decent but you can find much better shakes somewhere else in the city. There is NOTHING special about this place, unless you want to relive Midwest teenage memories.

  • Timon_8

In fact, you CAN'T find "much better shakes somewhere else in the city".  I've looked.  There are a couple that come close, but Steak 'n Shake's shakes really are excellent.

  • ronshapley

but didn't you love that chili over spaghetti and how about maid-rites ??   That I would luuuuuuuuuuuv

  • Unkle_Bob

Its free food for a year. Hell yeah I'd wait in line for that.

  • GentleGiant

Well, it's free "food" so good luck to you.

  • It's better than Shake Shack and people wait in line for hours for it.
