Will Latinos Like The New Dulce De Leche Cheerios?

jan511cheerios.jpg Hey, Latinos, have you heard? Cheerios knows their regular old Cheerios aren't caliente enough for you. That's why they've made an all-new dulche de leche flavored Cheerio. Other options included dipping the Cheerios in salsa, but cereal technicians eventually decided the chunky tomato-milk combo wouldn't stand.

"As the Hispanic population continues to grow in the U.S., so does the influence of Latin American flavors on American cuisine. With its Latin American roots and hint of caramel flavor, Dulce de Leche Cheerios brings this culinary trend to your family’s table while delivering the key health benefits you have come to expect from your trusted O's," explains the company in a press release for the new cereal, which is available nationwide.

Hey, it's not the first time they've added wacky flavors, but it does appear to be the first time an ethnic group has influenced the flavor decision. And, for what it's worth, early taste-testers are reporting the Latin Cheerios are "sickly sweet." Up next? We're hoping for soy-sauce spiked "O's" for the Asians and maybe some Marmite-laced cereal for those kooky Aussies.

Yes, they will.... especially ninos of the more impoverished families....Hey, just like U.S.

This article is a little rough off the tongue, but I think the attempt was to bash General Mills more than anything.  I love Dulce de Leche, but really don't think I'd like it translated into a cereal.  Soy sauce flavored Cherrios, however, sounds insanely delicious!

  • ToastNYC

I would like to see some mayo flavored O's for us white folks.

  • The Dulce De Leche strategy has likely worked very well for Starbuck's in this regard as well

Dulce de leche cheerios are sickly sweet! It’s a delicious flavor that I’ve always loved. If I eat them, it's usually for dessert!

  • dd7

Check out the ingredients - they include sugar, corn syrup, caramel syrup, and brown sugar syrup.  That sure sounds healthy!

  • Heatherbk

Caramel flavored corn syrup?!? sounds totally appetizing! yay

  • the4thcoming

Lmao.. This really is a racist headline.

But as far as Spanish food goes, its probably one of the most unhealthy and bad food to eat. Especially Dominican food. Everything is absorbed with grease: fried plantains, fried cheese, fried salami, fried patties etc etc.
Tastes great but, if you're on a suicide mission, its the way to go.

  • SonnyBobiche

"sickly sweet"; No kidding!  As good as Dominican dulce de leche (with guava or orange) is, I can only eat a teaspoon before I feel that eating more will kill me.

I have to ask: were you turned down from a job at a Gawker site? Geez.

  • RhubarbPlatypus

Seriously. What does this even have to do with New York?

  • Who cares? Jamie's first paragraph had me spitting my multi-grain cheerios for white people all over my keyboard.

  • eltacoguapo

How is this "wacky"? It's just caramel and would probably taste amazing. And why are you making it a race issue? There has been dulce de leche flavored foods for years. It's nothing new.

Did you read this? It's the second paragraph in this three paragraph story:

"As the Hispanic population continues to grow in the U.S., so does the
influence of Latin American flavors on American cuisine. With its Latin
American roots and hint of caramel flavor, Dulce de Leche Cheerios
brings this culinary trend to your family’s table while delivering the
key health benefits you have come to expect from your trusted “O’s,"
explains the company in a press release for the new cereal, which is
    available nationwide.

I'm pretty sure the good folks in the market research department of General Mills made this a race issue.

  • No, they didn't make it a race issue, except in they saw a large potential underserved market and decided to serve it.  The packaging is pretty benign and respectful, no potentially offensive characters or slogans, just a flavor for the market.

  • SalaciousBCrumb

You work for General Mills, don't you?

  • SeasTooFarToReach

I'm sure the only Haagen-Dazs flavor sold to latin families is Dulce de Leche.

  • DP

    Latinos cant afford haagen daz

  • birdtird

I'm a honkey, can I still eat these?
