Bloomberg Won't Let Wall Street Bull Roam Free

Despite the pleas of a thousand desperate tourists, Mayor Bloomberg will not allow the Wall Street bull, currently barricaded to stay safe from dastardly OWS protestors, to roam free. Looks like they'll just have to figure out how to take the subway back to Times Square. “The cops have to make a decision,” he told the Post. “If it looks like somebody’s going to deface it, they’ve got to be there. It’s just sad that there are people who might want to [vandalize] it."

And despite the fact that the protestors have been officially out of Zuccotti Park for weeks, he isn't taking any chances. “There’s always risks. But I think there’s a bigger risk at the moment . . . It’s just a symbol of our times. Hopefully, with time, people will stop focusing on that," he said. Yes, and start focusing on how the city is spending money to have officers guard an inanimate object instead.

At least make the bluecoats dress like matadors or something for fuck's sake.....If this town is going to be a theme park for tourists and the rich we've gotta be creative....

Yet again, inappropriate allocation of the NYPD. "Bloomberg's Army."

they should melt the bull down and use the bronze in an art class, commissioning teachers or art grants with the cops salaries instead.

a tribute to private markets being protected from the peoples ire with public security is artistically symbolic, but it seems the local flunkys have mistaken it for a literal lesson.

Strangely enough that statue isn't even city property, and in fact was impounded by the police when it was first installed without permission:

Also, the whole idea that it's somehow important to keep the golden likeness of a bull clean and undefaced is uncomfortably close to something out of Exodus 32.  Worshipping idols, anyone?

the threats are imaginary.  I don't think any of the OWS people care about this.  The first poster was a ballarina on top of the bull, dancing.

The cops and fences are just a way to say: "OWS is a threat and they are going to KILL YOU!!!"  or this bull...

  • Meh, I'm fine with this-- there is a risk of vandalism, so there is that.  Because it is a symbol of our times & our times are kind of effed up, if you haven't been paying attention.

  • There's always the LaGuardia statue. I could piss on that short man.

I can think of another short mayor you could piss on...

So, what are the per hour costs to guard that thing right there? Don't forget benefits!  At least five cops right there, right?

The entire city *could* be defaced, and yet this is the part of it that gets armed police officers to prevent it from happening. Makes very little sense.

How dare anyone try to keep this artwork from being defaced!
