Police say a man shot himself in the head while driving on the Throgs Neck Bridge last night. The Daily News reports, "The man was heading northbound from Queens toward the Bronx in a 1999 Chevy Silverado when he took his own life just before he arrived at the tollbooth, cops said."

Apparently the man shot himself at 7:11 p.m., and then his truck "slammed into another car and then careened into a tollbooth entrance. Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man — whose name was withheld pending family notification — in cardiac arrest, fire officials said," according to the News.

The man died at a hospital; three other people were treated for injuries.

Shot himself right before the tollbooth, 'eh? I realize the tolls are expensive and all, but that's not a very practical way of trying to get around having to pay it.

    wait for it...
"have some decency of waiting before you make such an insensitive joke""you are a cold blooded animal"etc etc etc but you get a LIKE from me.

  • Rocknrope

Did he at least put his hazards on?

  • swampyankeesmom

    what a dick!

  • jibbly

Wait, so the guy offed himself WHILE he was still driving?  He didn't pull over or anything?  Goddamn.

  • He shot himself while driving? Are they sure this wasn't an accident? I mean, I get that suicidal people aren't generally thinking straight, but shooting yourself without even stopping the car is well into bizarro territory.

  • FU Boy

Maybe he just wanted to be sure.  Gunshot to the head while aiming the car at a concrete and steel structure.  Maybe he was sipping coffee with arsenic too - going for a trifecta.

Nothing wrong with being thorough. Unless, you know, you injure others while doing it.

  • diablofreak

could've just drove around in an auto junkyard at 60mph and texted his suicide note

  • ErinGossamer

So selfish. If you're going to take your own life, do it without risking the life of others. I'm sick of these people crashing their cars on purpose and driving the wrong way down highways.

  • sauerkrautcity

yeah it's so fucking selfish being so emotionally unstable that you choose to kill yourself

  • It is if you put other's in harm's way, because you're an "emotionally unstable" jizzbag.  Fuck him and his problems.  Kill yourself at home, garbage can.

  • swampyankeesmom

uh, it is actually. why not reach out for help? the family and friends are left to pick up the pieces. not to mention suicide committed over petty bullshit.

  • ErinGossamer

Sauer, I understand where you are coming from and how my comment can very easily be regarded as offensive. I understand that when people are so mentally unstable that suicide is a real option, they are obviously not thinking clearly or rationally. Of course I would have preferred for this person, and any other person considering suicide, to get the help they require. However, I do feel that people still must be held responsible for their actions. There are millions of emotionally unstable people who get the treatment and help they need. I understand that the person may not realize it (as schmeep pointed out, due to their illness) but their actions are still considered selfish and irresponsible (to me; obviously you are entitled to your own opinion).

  • sauerkrautcity

ah yeah I understand, I just got a bit worked up there.  Hit kinda close to home ya know.

  • no, what she is saying is that it is selfish to choose to kill yourself in a manner that may be potentially harmful to others. Whether that is physical harm or mental (someone who jumps in front of a train).  I tend to agree.

  • sauerkrautcity

yeah i understand that, it doesn't really change anything.  if they are emotionally unstable enough to kill themselves in the first place, who knows what else they are going to do.  yeah obviously it's "selfish" for someone to kill themselves in a situation like this where they can harm others but who knows what's going through their head.  it's selfish for a clear mind to do something like that, not someone who's already fucked up

  • schmeep

I agree with sauer- the upshot of severe mental illness is psychotic narcissism- the inability to see beyond yourself.  When someone is undergoing a mental health crisis, they are likely not to regard others.  That's why mental health treatment is essential for the public works, not just for that individual (and when there are cuts we all suffer).  It's difficult therefore to make the argument 'wow, that mentally ill person was so selfish' as it's part and parcel of the illness.

  • I understand both you and sauerkraucity's points, but come on, look at the suicide in question. A guy wants to kill himself, so he blows his brains out while speeding down the highway heading towards a toll-booth? I don't care how disconnected from reality one is, or how alone they may feel (and by feeling alone, feeling their actions have no consequences) but c'mon, this guy knew what he was doing and that by choosing to kill himself in such a manner, he could very likely kill or severely injure others. You're trying to kill yourself, not other people in the process. And if you are trying to kill yourself in a manner such as the one described in this article, you would appear to be practicing "I'm taking some of you fuckers with me!" and that is SELFISH!

  • diablofreak

im not wishing this upon you, but think about it. if you or one of your loved ones get hurt by one of these selfish dickbags, let's see you hold your high horse stance.

"oh yeah its alright, i understand, he's just emotionally unstable, yeah bummer about how his car rammed into mine and the toll booth clerk"

  • sauerkrautcity

my high horse stance? are you fucking kidding me? wait until your best friend fucking kills himself then come back to me. yeah obviously i'd be a wreck in that situation, obviously i'd hold the person who did it accountable.  but how can you expect someone to tell the difference between what's selfish and not when that person has chosen to kill themselves? if someone who chooses to kill himself thinks that is the right decision, how can you ever expect them to differentiate between right and wrong?
