Shot Five Times In Bushwick, Chinese Deliveryman Survives

Last week a Chinese deliveryman was shot five times by a perp looking for some free sesame chicken—and survived! On December 15, Jin Jin Chen, 22, was sent by his bosses at King Food Chinese on Graham Avenue to deliver three orders of sesame chicken, some roast pork and a bottle of Sprite to an apartment at the Bushwick Houses. But nobody answered the number he'd been told to call when he got there. That's when he was allegedly attacked by 17-year-old Victor Cubero.

According to the police, Cubero threatened Chen with a gun and demanded the food. Chen ignored him and went back to his scooter, at which point Cubero allegedly shot him five times, hitting him in the stomach and chest. Per the Post, "the gunman calmly walked away with the food order, while the hardworking delivery man crashed his scooter and lay bleeding on the street."

Chen was taken to Kings County Hospital where, after multiple surgeries, he is in stable condition and partially paralyzed. Late Tuesday night, police arrested Cubero in connection with the shooting and charged him with attempted murder, assault, robbery and weapons possession. The 5', 100 lb., Cubero reportedly has prior arrests for robbery, petit larceny and marijuana possession.

Crimes against Chinese food deliverymen are, sadly, not uncommon: They have been shot and killed for food and (very little) money, or they are victims for teens to callously beat, as was the case earlier this year.

Can we get an update on Mr. Chen's condition, please? My heart goes out to anyone who's the victim of a crime that results in enormous medical bills when it's highly probable that they don't have health insurance and even worse... their income was probably supporting more than just one person.

C'mon Gothamist--your gentrification naivete is flaring. Once again, all one has to do is either ask a local, or do a 10-second google search, but it's reaching a point that one can expect this kind of sloppiness here.

  • luke_1

I can't believe you posted four times about the Bushwick houses technically not being in Bushwick. No one cares, dude. They're across the frickin' street.

  • Dennis sinneD

Oh, Gothamist removed my comments on your behalf. How cute. But I gather you still read them, so consider them. And consider this: it's inconsistent, if not hypocritical, to write that "no one cares." Writing that in of itself shows that YOU care--care like a troll.

And the zip code of the Bushwick Houses is 11206--which is the zip code for the post office on Debevoise Street in the Third Ward of Williamsburg, not Bushwick, which is served by the 11237.

Check it on the map: http://maps.google.com/maps/pl...

Um, just FYI, the Bushwick Houses are west of and on Bushwick Avenue. They get their name for being on Bushwick Avenue but they are not from Bushwick--being west of Bushwick Avenue they thus constitute the southeasternmost corner of the Third Ward in Williamsburg.

  • I wish this depravity surprised me.

Bushwhacked in Bushwick for Chinese take-out food. . A measly dollar will get you like 3 wings, in any of these places but this guy has to rob and shoot a delivery guy. Man, that's just sad.

Here's hoping to a full recovery - good luck Mr. Chen!

The dumb thing about your comment is that Chinese has the L sound. It's Korean and Japanese that don't generally distinguish between R and L.  But I suppose Asians and their Asian languages are all the same.

  • Peanut_Butter

I think nowadays, the R and L transposition joke has been broadened to all East Asians.

  • Fofofofofo

    Fah-rah-rah-rah-rahrahrahrah! Happy horridays!

  • wow, the r and l transposition, 'u mad bro.'
i bet you own meme t-shirts and say things like 'epic fail' in normal conversations.
