Aww: Man Gets Ticket While Giving To Charity, Cop Pays It

There are nice people out there! Earlier this week construction manager Chris Csoka got himself a $60 ticket while he was dropping off a truckload of baby supplies to an unemployed man—despite being told by a traffic agent that it was okay for him to unload in a no parking zone on Staten Island. But after hearing about the ticket an unidentified NYPD detective has stepped up to pay it for him. It may not feel like Christmas outside, but the spirit at least is there!

"I was like, 'oh man, unbelievable,'" the detective told the News. "I thought it was horrible. I don’t want to beat up on the traffic agent, the traffic agent’s got a job to do; but we get a bad rap as it is. Maybe the traffic agent had a directive to give out summonses in that particular area."

In addition to paying the ticket, the cop also arranged for two cases of diapers to be donated to unemployed EMT Anthony Spencer and his infant son. "I’ve never heard of a total stranger from another borough going out of his way to help someone like this," Spencer said after being given a check (and also a gift certificate to Toys R Us). "For this to happen to me is like a blessing from God."

While this is no doubt an exercise in good judgement on the cops behalf, I cannot stop thinking about that axiom of, "No good deed goes unpunished."  Just knowing how much *some* cops love to stick together and show a united blue front of fear and or forced respect, won't bode well for a cop that simply acted like a fucking human.  It's a matter of time before this story hits The Rant.  Kudos for doing the right thing though.  http://theerant.yuku.com/

ON Staten Island, not in Staten Island.

  • ItchyGomez

Do you say "ON Manhattan?"  No.  Staten Island is a location (borough) as well as a physical island.  Usually it's being referenced as a place where something happened, not based on geology, so "in Staten Island" should be perfectly fine (like "in Brooklyn" or "in Manhattan").

    Actually I'd like to disagree.

when you refer to Staten Island as the borough, you should say "in the borough of Staten Island" but when the island proper by itself is referred it should be "on Staten Island" since you wouldn't say "on the island of Staten Island"

But what the hell do i know, rebuttal welcomed.

English grammar is a bitch sometimes.

I guess I consider "in Staten Island" to be shorthand for "in the borough of Staten Island" because nobody says that.  And why wouldn't you say "on the island of Staten Island" if you say "in the borough of Staten Island"?

my brain just exploded. grammar is hard!

  • Duh. Thanks. Fixed.
