Video: Raging Crown Heights Blaze Leaves Firefighter Severely Burned

A firefighter is hospitalized in critical but stable condition after sustaining burns over 42 percent of his body while battling a two alarm blaze in Crown Heights this morning. FDNY units responded to the scene around 9 a.m. at 1102 Prospect Place, where a three-story brownstone was engulfed in flames. Here's video of the fire, via Firefighter Nation. (Be warned, the video shows a firefighter engulfed in flames):

The unidentified firefighter is currently hospitalized at the Cornell Burn Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, under heavy sedation but breathing on his own. An FDNY spokesman tells us he sustained burns to his head, face, neck, back, and hands. Another firefighter is also in serious condition at the burn center. Three other firefighters also sustained minor injuries battling the blaze, which was brought under control around 10:15 a.m. No civilians were hurt, and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

yes fires burn. if you watch the above video. two rooms side by side. one room filled with old furnature you'd find pre 1980. the second room is filled with furnature you can buy today. you will see just how fast fire escalates today with all the petrolium based products you find in your living room or any room in your house for that matter. products you wouldn't even think of like couches are all petrolium based (the styrofoam inside). where they used to be filled with cotton and other natural fillers.
the city should be looking into adding firemen instead of taking away. just look at the time difference, its unbelieveable!
it is a fact that the firemen in the burn center would not have been as severly burned (or maybe not burned at all) if a hoseline was in place operating. it is also a fact that it took a minute longer than it would have if the 5th fireman position wasn't cut. these cuts just don't hurt us, they hurt you too.
staffing cuts definately hurt these firemen!

THIS WAS A REPLY TO LT WORF ON ANOTHER ARTICLE ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR FIRE WERE CUTS DELAYED WATER ON THE FIRE. LOOK AT THE VIDEO AND YOU WILL TRULY BE AMAZED AT HOW QUICK A FIRE SPREADS.

That sucks, but it made me wonder about something.  How do they come up with the percent of the body burned?  I mean, 42 is a specific number; 8% less than half.

Google "Rule of Nines" and "Palm Rule" in relation to burns.

Rule of 9: head 9%, torso 18% front/18% back, arms 9% each, legs 18% each.

Palm rule, palm is roughly 1% body surface area.

I'm glad I never had to apply that rule.
