Can The Giants Avoid The Redskins Trap?

121811giants.jpg

This is a classic trap game. The Giants return home after an emotional victory to face a 4-9 Washington club before a big matchup against the Jets next week. New York has shown a worrisome trend of playing down to the competition at home this season. They lost to bad clubs in Seattle and Philadelphia and barely survived against Miami and St. Louis. In fact, the only "good" team they have defeated at home is Buffalo, but that was when the Bills were 4-1 (they are 5-8 now).

And there are some major problems on defense. Lost in the euphoria of last week's win in Dallas was a secondary that surrendered 321 yards and got torched in the fourth quarter at several key moments. And injuries to the pass rush, Umenyiora is out and Tuck is out, mean that things likely won't get better this week defensively.

Luckily, Washington is not a great football team and they have plenty of injury concerns of their own. Washington gave the Patriots a fierce fight last week and they will give New York everything they can handle this week. But in the end, Eli and his offensive weapons will prove to be too much. The pick here is New York in a close game.

The Giants are playing like shit so far. Manning is doing his best Scott Brunner impersonation.

This is absolutely NOT a trap game. The Cowboys already won and as of this moment are ahead of the Giants in the standings. This is a MUST WIN game for the G-men.

Based on your lack of not knowing what a trap game is, then the Cowboys played a trap game last night.

It's not "MUST WIN" for the Giants.  They can go into the last game of the season against the Cowboys trailing by one game and still win the division with a victory.  In that scenario the teams would have the same record and the Giants win the first tiebreaker which is head to head record.  If the Giants lose today then next week's game against the Jets is must win, especially since they play before the Cowboys play the Eagles.  I suppose you could call today's game "must win" since the Jets are probably better than the Redskins and will be fighting for a playoff spot.

  • Tuck is NOT out. At least try to get your facts straight. This isn't the first time. And Kenny Phillips is back which should help in the secondary.
