Grimaldi's Gets City Approval For Coal Oven!

The Grimaldi's Pizza relocation saga has come to a happy ending: the city Buildings Department has given approval for Grimaldi's to install a coal-fired oven in their new DUMBO location. “The pie will be the same, maybe a little better,” owner Frank Ciolli told the Post.

Grimaldi's was supposed to have closed—their lease was up—and moved next door last month, so that the space's original pizzaiolo, Patsy Grimaldi, could start work on his new pizzeria in the old space. The move was initially postponed by a death in the family of Grimaldi's current owners, and then because they were given a stop work order due to the then illegal coal oven.

Now that Ciolli has resubmitted an application to specify the type of oven, that stop work order has been dropped; Brooklyn architect Robert Scarano, who quit because of the dispute, is back on the project now as well. Ciolli will be able to plan a grand opening for the new space at 1 Front Street in the immediate future.

    I just hope more pizzeria's get to use coal. This is great as long as it wasn't special treatment- although honestly this looks a LOT like special treatment.
