Video: Cyclist Gets Locked In By Another Bike, Administers Street Justice

Could have been worse? (Photo via Mike Dillingham's Flickr)

Ever lock your bike on the street and return to find that another cyclist has carelessly "locked you in" by threading their lock through your brake cable or your frame? You can either wait for the person to return and set you free or, as this filmmaker/cyclist demonstrates, grab a saw and liberate yourself. And if you're Casey Neistat, who made this funny slapstick video about drivers blocking bike lanes, you'll return later to find the bike's owner standing around with his friends looking pissed.

And it only took 40 seconds to saw through the Kryptonite lock! On his YouTube page, Neistat explains, "I just had my brakes adjusted and couldn't release the cable without undoing from the calipers. This would've been a major inconvenience and seeing how the other was negligent (I didn't lock my bike to his) I thought she be inconvenienced (having to buy a new bike lock) not me (having to readjust my brakes)." Now, there's bound to be some debate about the ethics of Neistat's actions, but one thing's for certain: every cyclist should have an assistant on call 24/7 with a fully charged angle grinder!

If my brake cable cost $2 and the other guys lock cost $2,000, I would still cut the lock.

$4,000 cable? Yup. I'd still cut it.

"That's not an MP, that's a YP.... YOUR PROBLEM!"

  • matteus

Ah, he was so cool when he was a nobody making that bike-lane video. Should've stuck with that story... now I will always remember him as a douchebag.

  • Alessandro Casagli

fix the video. it has been pulled.

  • swampyankeesmom

i noticed a lot the commenters supporting him have posted here for the first time. sounds like he asked his friends to do so. i can't imagine anyone supporting him for any other reason.

  • J_Temperance

oh man, just spent 10 minutes on this d'bag's website.  this guy blows.

  • pendejito

    Go back to Kansas!

  • If this is staged, why lock in the brake cable and not part of the tubing?

As others have said, releasing (and temporarily reattaching) the brake cable requires a trip to the dollar store and 30 seconds of twisting a pair of pliers. It's so pointless to...

    --WAIT A MINUTE--

Signs in the background say this was shot on Bedford. The only hardware store in North Williamsburg that would have an angle grinder is Crest True Value. Those guys close every day by 7 PM. The time at the top of the video says 7:42...

I get it. This is staged AND stupid. What a world.

  • luke_1

    Bedford St. Manhattan.

PS There is a great Hardware store on Bedford and N9.

  • canofpeas

That happened to me; some asshole locked my bike to his through my brake cable.  I used an allen wrench to remove my cable and then reassembled it.  If I had an angle grinder with me I would have probably cut his bike in two.

  • Ragingsemi

So instead re-attaching his own $10 brake cable, he cuts the other guy's $100+ lock because he made an honest mistake.

  • luke_1

That lock is like $40 at most. I was about to get a mini but after that video I'll stick with my yellow lock and keep my bike.

  • ed_Ex2

"Yeah, sorry, I had to cut it cuz I had to get out of here, although I did have enough time to go home, write you a note, and ride back."

What a douchebag. It seems to be an honest mistake by the other rider.

Also, to FP Scout, he's got a show on HBO... wake up dude.

  • randomtransplant

Nobodies watched random HBO since that kafiyeh was in style. Which is probably why he had to post up to youtube in the first place.

  • hascoville

I think PmY is the "assistant" in the video and trying to save face. letting everyone know that this fool doesn't just treat people like shit for nothing. "Hey, he's on HBO!" (because that's important and impressive)

  • randomtransplant

i wonder how long this show nobodies ever heard of will last?

  • PmY

Woah woah woah. #1 not staged, Neistat has a history of films just like this. #2, how is this not the kryptonite-owner's fault?? Just be conscious of where you lockup your bike - simple. If someone parks their car beside mine in a parallel space, I'm going to have their a$$ towed. No question. Same situation, different tools. Either way the guy who locked him in is an inconsiderate prick. Hopefully he'll think twice before he leaves his ish in people's way again.

  • ShakinBoots

#1 It's staged, just like his bike lane vid.

#2 It's time for that "ish" shit to go away now.

  • whitecastlerock

Staged or not, this video is further evidence of just how fucking lame NYC has become. Sickening...

  • FP Scout

This fellow needs another m.o. if he wants to earn a living making movies.
