[UPDATE] Occupy Wall Street "Squidding" At Goldman Sachs Right Now

[Update below] Several hundred Occupy Wall Street protesters are currently posted outside Goldman Sachs' headquarters "squidding." The action, not to be confused with "tenting," refers to a 2010 Rolling Stone piece by Matt Taibbi in which the journalist calls the Goldman, "a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money." The demonstration is also targeted at EGT, who along with Goldman is accused of "committing egregious tax fraud at West Coast shipping ports."

Accordingly, there are protesters outside the Port of Oakland, and though some are claiming they have shut down the port, that can't be confirmed. However, here in New York we're promised "an exciting theatrical finale" incorporating Taibbi's description. Is Lloyd Blankfein about to dust off his community theater chops?

[UPDATE / 12:00 p.m.] Protesters entered the atrium of the World Financial Center, a little more than a block away from Goldman's 200 West Street building, and were arrested after police instructed them to leave. A NYPD spokesperson could not confirm the number of arrests yet or the charges, just that arrests have in fact been made. One tweeter for the protesters puts the number at 68, and the person manning the Twitter account for #OccupyWallStNYC has been arrested, along with a livestreamer.

[UPDATE / 2:10 p.m.] The NYPD confirms that there were 17 total arrests inside the World Financial Center, and all were charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. City Room was there, and noted that the property's owner is Brookfield Properties. Bill Dobbs, an Occupy Wall Street organizer, told the paper, “We thought we would come over and give Brookfield a direct message."

  • Protest something worthwhile like mock elections and our lack of democracy
  • Just how stupid are these people - they are going about things the wrong way.  The problem is in Wathington DC, not on Wall Street.

These people have been brought up thinking that if you get a college degree you are supposed to get a job - NOT.

  • Why protest the puppets, when it is the puppeteers on Wall Street that are pulling the strings? The more people are reminded where the real power resides, the sooner the curtain will be pulled back. The buffoons we elect have no power. Remember the conversation between Obama and President Sarkozy, when Sarko said he hated Netanyahu and he was a liar, President Obama said, you think you've got a problem, I have to deal with him everyday. Deal with him every day mind you! Unelected representatives of Godman Sachs put in charge of Greece, Italy, Hank Paulson, Tim Geitner, the US Treasury ruled by Goldman Sachs. Yes, what a clever distraction to blame Washington and those wicked government officials, while the monster Squid disembowels this country and Europe.
  • They are in DC, and what about the ones who are over 50? Wanna make up some reason to resent them too? We were all brought up thinking there would be as many jobs as there are people, but times have changed, haven't they?
  • Obamatheracist
Wow I thought this "movement" was a total joke till I read about the "Squid-in"..my apologies.

I'm curious since Obama has been bought and paid for by Wall street and the "evil" Republicans are always in pockets of big business, who will OWS and their liberal brain-dead supporters vote for in 2012?
  • ixvnyc
Well, if you had any brains yourself you could figure out that once that OWS proves that you can muster political power not only without Wall Street money but even going against it, maybe in the future we could have candidates with all the honesty and good intentions who could for once defeat those with all the money. Obviously, this will not happen in 2012, but unless you are a Mayan, you could look beyond.
  • Why WOULDN'T anyone take OWS seriously?
  • lol
  • i > u
Sometimes I worry for these people. Being beaten, captured, and released by NYPD loonies is one thing, but I get this lump in my throat when thinking about the private hires an organization like this might retain on some balance sheet that'll never see the light of day. Men in unmarked black uniforms driving around in unmarked black vehicles--the kind the authorities won't find any background info on if push ever comes to shove.
  • Roger_the_Shrubber
The Patriot Act basically lets the government do all that.
  • Detex
Wow! I want what he's having!!!

    What are you talking about?
  • Anything is possible, sadly that is not always a good thing.
  • bobbyjfromtheuk12
WTF are you actually talking about?
  • yeah, this seems to be the new direction in america. we will be brazil soon.
  • you sound like a paranoid schizophrenic...
  • I'm sure this will be construed as anti-semitic at some point.....
  • Maybe by you
  • ktinnyc
    Unpossible!

Everyone knows OWS is over because they aren't still camped out at Zuccotti park.
  • you really don't get it, do you?
  • ktinnyc
I'm pretty certain you're the one that isn't getting it.
