Last Night's Action: Rangers Excel Down a Man

2008_12_rangerslogo.jpg For the first time in two seasons, the Rangers scored two short-handed in goals in one game. Carl Hagelin and Ryan Callahan each scored while the Sabres were on a power play in a 4-1 win over the Buffalo. Callahan added a goal at normal strength later, and Marian Gaborik threw in his 14th strike of the season. The last time the Rangers had two short-handed goals in the same period was March 6, 1997, when Bill Berg and Niklas Sundstrom scored.

With a 2-1 loss loss to the Canadiens, the Devils fell for the sixth time in eight games. After falling behind by two goals, the Devils rallied and had a chance to tie the game late on a penalty shot after Montreal's Josh Gorges was whistled for covering the puck. Nick Palmieri, fresh off a promotion from Albany of the AHL, scored the lone New Jersey goal.

In their 6-3 loss to the Penguins, the Islanders wasted leads of 2-0 and 3-2. David Ullstrom and Milan Jurcina put them up early, and Kyle Okposo put them ahead by a goal early in the second period. But the Penguins answered with four straight goals to close the game, including the second by James Neal. Al Montoya allowed all six scores.
