More Photos Of The Grand Central Apple Store, Opening Tomorrow!

Tomorrow at 10 a.m. Grand Central Terminal will become more crowded than usual, with the grand opening of the new Apple Store. We got a sneak peek yesterday, and you can click through for more of our photos, showing off the 23,000-square-foot space.

Our photographer Katie Sokoler tells us, "One of the employees showed me a new way to purchase stuff from the store. If you have the Apple Store App on your phone there's an easy pay option, all you have to do is scan the bar code on the product and it charges it to your iTunes account. So now you don't have to talk to anyone and just check yourself out!"

An added treat: the packaging for the grand opening t-shirts gives a nod to the Grand Central Concourse ceiling—Sokoler says, "When you undo the box it opens up into the constellation design on the ceiling." Nice touch, Apple... though we wish this packaging came with every purchase there!

How about some coverage of the sweetheart deal that Apple got that the state Comptroller is now investigating? Apple is paying below market rate, substantially lower than any of the other retailers in Grand Central and is the only retailer there not subject to paying a % of their revenues or any of the other fees the occupants have to pay there. They also paid the previous tenant (who did pay revenue sharing and the fees)$5 million to buy out their lease.

But yay Apple! They're so cool!

Well, for one thing, Apple employees are paid a livable wage, from day one. For another, they get generous health benefits and overtime. For yet another, they do not engage in regular violation of labor laws. Do I need to continue?

  • It's funny to me. NYC "literati" who now spend more than half their lives in the looking down position probably poo-poo small town USA when they are pumped for a new WalMart. And yet, look at the mania here. How is it any different or more legit? At the end of the day, it's just consumerism and the allegiance to Mac is so pretentious and borderline classist.

Now I truly regret not taking any decent photos inside before this pile of crap was put there.

  • Dan

I wonder how much Apple gave gothamist.

  • Is Jen paid a bonus for every exclamation point she works into a story?

  • I used ONE (not including the quote from our photographer). But yes, the Punctuation Society does cut me a nice check every time I use one.

Usually I'd yawn, but when Apple opens a new store that they want to make a fuss about, they tend to give away a LOT of free shit.

By shit, I mean IPads and IMacs.

  • Really? Proof?

  • LtWorf

They did so during the opening of their Meatpacking Store. It was ridiculous.
