Video: Go Back To 1970s New York City For 5 Minutes

CUBES70S1211.jpeg
Yeah, even office cubicles looked cooler back then.

It's almost 2012, which means the world is probably going to end and we can safely reflect upon the past without someone telling us to stop living in the past. The past is all we have in a world with no future, right? Or, whatever, maybe there is a future... but that doesn't change the fact that these photos of 1970s New York aren't fun to look at.

Interesting that the image at 1:04 could have been taken at OWS this week (except too much hair, and not as much diversity). The more things change... the more they remain the same. Let's hope we can break this negative feedback loop soon.

  • Too much Berkowitz, not enough Bronson.

the cubicle photo is a still shot from Jacques Tati's Playtime.  a really cool movie, but it doesn't take place in new york or in the 70s.

  • Very cool, reminds me of when I was a kid.  It's really incredible how different New York is nowadays.

Thanks for posting this.  Just finished four months of chemo, and have not felt like rocking out a little in a very long time.  Perfectly chosen song for those times.  I haven't been back to NY since before 9/11, may never return.  I understand things have changed, but jeesh.  No more Leshko's, no more Gotham Book Mart.  Do they even sell heroin anymore, lol

At least the city had some character in those days, before the great corporate takeover by Starbucks and Bank of America. NYC is looking increasingly generic these days.

    Where was Serpico?

  • Wow.

  • luke_1

    Austerity. We're heading there again.

Some really great street photography- proving once again the value of shooting strangers without their knowledge (for posterity's sake- just to spell it out), totally agree about the Son of Sam repeats; perhaps replace one with Etan Patz? Or forego more crime stuff and give some more love to music/film- specifically punk, CBGB, Rocky Horror on 8th Street, the Velvet Underground, etc...

    Too fast!

  • virgilstarkwell

so wait - someone can just do that and not give photo credits to diane arbus, nan golden, helen levitt, etc., etc., etc? how is that possible?

  • um, yeah.  it's not hard.  just don't cite the source.
    not rocket science there buddy.

  • masterjarvis

are you dumb or something? he's not asking if it can literally be done.  he's asking if it is legal to do such a thing

  • theonlyseven

as long as one does not charge money to view the video, then yes, you legally can do this.

  • masterjarvis

i wasnt the one asking the question

uhm...was really psyched to see this (being born in '57) but this was way too fast.  Maybe it's me, but they needed to slow down just a bit to allow the images to really sink in.  Oh well, another sign of aging I suppose...

  • famdoc

MP, and others, agree it was too fast, but remember: this is the
Adderall generation.  Unlike those of us born in the 50s, who would like
to savor these images, the average Gothamist reader is doing four other
things as he views this video...texting, taking a phone call, drinking a
beer and taking his ADD meds.

    Aging?  Yeah, we're all aging.

  • masterjarvis

relax buddy.  the guy that made the slide show just made it move too quickly because he did a bad job, it has nothing to do with adderall or anything else you mentioned

  • No, I agree. This moved WAY too fast. Also, why were there 5-6 images of David Berkowitz? I get that happened... but really?
