John McCain Is Sorry Chuck Schumer Can't Take A Joke About Long Island

That Sen. John McCain, always with the yukking! (AP)

During a Senate debate about the treatment of enemy combatants, GOP Arizona Sen. (and Ed Harris opposite day impersonator) John McCain made a throwaway joke about the good people of Long Island: "Last I checked, Long Island was part—albeit sometimes regrettably—of the United States Of America." Instant rimshot! Sen. Chuck Schumer didn't find it so funny though, which led to some seriously catty back and forth insults between the two.

After hearing McCain's comment, Schumer soberly tweeted, “All of America saw how heroic Long Islanders were on 9/11. Long Island deserves an apology." McCain later returned to the Senate floor and said Long Island was “wonderful” and not some unwanted land mass—but he also responded directly to Schumer, saying: “I'm sorry there's at least one of my colleagues that can't take a joke, and so I apologize if I offended him and hope that someday he will have a sense of humor."

Schumer couldn't let this stand, and tweeted in response: "NYers can take a joke. But if @SenJohnMcCain wants to mock parts of America, stick to Arizona." Does this mean Schumer and Ann Coulter have more in common than anyone would have ever imagined? Leave it to actual Long Island Rep. Steve Israel to try to clear the air Long Island-style: with a shmear. "If John McCain had ever had a Long Island bagel, he wouldn't be saying that. I'm going to send some over and then ask him for an update on his views," he said, according to the Daily News.

    Schumer....now there's a real joke!

  • The proper response should have been for Schumer to tell McCain that he would "show him the Bronx". Am I right, Bobby Bonilla?

  • what a douchebag.

And it is this banter, that keeps us from the point. The point is this isn't a time for jokes. That was simply my point. The snarky comments may make you feel better, but feeling better in times like these are for the numb.

i don't get it - i thought long island wanted to secede....

  • The vacillate between wanting to secede and wanting to be annexed, depending on how much money they owe and if they got laid the night before.

What I just sent to the Senator
Dear Senator John McCain:Thank you for bringing to light just how much ignorance is standing on the senate floor. Perhaps you are uninformed: let me apprise you of some of OUR history. I live in Oyster Bay. Home of the summer White House of Theodore Roosevelt. You may or may not have heard of Washington's Culper Spy Ring. If not for the actions of those involved, including Culper Jr., who lived a block from my current home on E. Main Street, the revolution may have not been won.I look out of my window and see the back porch where Washington stopped to talk to the citizens of Long Island, the dreamers of America. Do you have a house such as that in Arizona? Both of my Grandfathers went to war, one on land and who served hand to hand combat in both Pacific and European theaters, and the other in the air in the European theater. They came back to America and started their families on Long Island, one of these homes was located in what many know as the original suburbs: Levittown of Long Island. One went on to build American planes for Republic, the other to be an attorney who founded Long Island Lutheran High School and became President of the Nassau County Bar Association. My father was one of those people that were masked by the toxic, black smoke that changed our lives forever on 9/11. He watched body parts and memos alike fall from the sky like a hellish rain. What has Arizona done for the United States of America? This is not about jokes. This is about reality. And the reality is not funny Senator McCain.

    Impressive, intelligent and sensitive.

  • ErikaS723

The only thing Arizona did was try to not acknowledge the Martin Luther Day holiday....btw congrats to being PC in 1992,,,,McCain voided it in 1983. Embarrassing.

    Whatever, it's funny.

People treat Long Island like their ugly little brother - He's my brother and I can poke him around all I want, but the minute YOU mess with him, HELL NO.

  • RobNYC

John McCain is also the same guy that made the joke "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?"  He's also the guy who called his wife a cunt in public.

  • Guest

well we all know McCain can take a joke -- he took one as his running mate in '08.

  • LICnative

If McCain had said it on a Sunday morning, while standing between Chuck and a microphone, there would have been blood spilled.

  • Len_Drexler

Bob Dole doesn't like it when you steal his jokes.

  • Dirk

Seriously, these two grown men are behaving like a bunch of 10 year olds. Don't they have other things to be worrying about?

  • brooklynRick

Even if it was a bad joke, which it isn't.  Shumer should have bigger fish to fry, grow the fuck up

The funny part is that the very Midwestern transplants that are howling with indignation over this slight are the same people who will say the exact things about Staten Island.
