Manis, Pedis, Updos For Little Girls: Evil Or Necessary Evil?

"Darlin' don't you go and cut your hair" but if you do, you might need to be distracted by Thomas the Tank Engine videos

A few months ago, kid-focused salon Beehives and Buzzcuts opened on First Avenue near East 21st Street in Manhattan, offering manicures and pedicures, as well as blowouts, updos and braiding parties (there are also services for boys). Owner Karolyn Massey explained she wanted a fun place for kids to get their first haircuts, telling DNAinfo, "I don't plan to have it be like that show 'Toddlers & Tiaras.' It's a cute, fun little afternoon for a mother and her daughter." But today, the Post suggests it's dangerously playing into the fixation that females have on their outer beauty. Calling Naomi Wolf!

A professor, Diane Levin, author of So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do To Protect Their Kids, laments, "When children are young, they should be learning how to have connected relationships where they’re relating to people based on things they’re doing, not based on how they look. Even something like putting nail polish on at 5 gets girls involved in things that separate them from playing in broader ways that would help girls and boys play together." Know what can also separate girls and boys—when the girls are wearing babikinis or padded bras.

Still, many kids love to emulate Mommy and Daddy, so giving kids a taste of grownup experiences may be unavoidable. Plus, do you real want a little kid sitting next you to at your salon? And moms tell the Post the salon is a great idea, with one saying, "It appeals to adults, too! I’d love to sit in a butterfly chair and get a pedicure." And for reference on what the "Todlers & Tiaras" treatment is—for a one-year-old, it means airbrush makeup and hairpieces:

  • I must be strange, because I don't see the appeal of mani/pedis for adults either. I constantly hear other women talking about it being their "little luxury" but to me it's just an overpriced pain in the ass and time-waster. Why would I encourage my kid to do something so pointless?

  • It's all in the complimentary hand/foot massage.

Yeah, I agree, I've never gotten my nails done. I can do it at home myself for much cheaper, thanks.

Men notice: you kinda look like a marmot with your nails looking so funky.

  • Speaking for us lady marmots - as we do our nails  ourselves, our nails always look nice.

As long as they don't start waxing services.

Is this an aspect of "helicopter-parenting" where you have to do EVERYTHING with your kids?
