[UPDATE] Occupy Earplugs: Miley Cyrus Pens Euro-House Track For The Movement

[Update below] Occupy Wall Street survived attempts by the 1% to co-opt the message, and arguably the movement itself sustained the removal of its original encampment at the hands of the NYPD. But can it survive Miley Cyrus? A new song, "Liberty Walk," was uploaded to Cyrus' YouTube account on November 23, and is "Dedicated to the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in." Homeland Security take note: dispersing crowds just got a little easier.

The video itself is a mashup of all the footage of the Occupy protests across the world, which makes sense because it costs nothing to use and packs a punch. But we're not sure if the Occupy movement needed a Euro-themed club mix as a call to action. We'll pick up a placard, but only because this stuff we just ingested makes it FEEL SOOOOO GOOODD.

Also, what the hell is a "Liberty Walk?" Sure, there was "Liberty Square" and lots of talk of "liberty," but would it be so hard to use an actual catchphrase from the movement itself? Mic Check? We Are The 99%? Are Stephan Jenkins and Miley Cyrus too good of artists to use such obvious terminology? And what's up with those rasta colors in the intro?

[UPDATE] This song is even sadder than we first imagined: Miley Cyrus already recorded a song called "Liberty Walk," on her third album, Can't Be Tamed, in 2010. This is merely a remix set to Occupy Wall Street footage. Our apologies, Stephan Jenkins: at least your terrible protest song is original.

This old boy's trying to hold you back / Tryin to make ya feel that you're less than that / Giving nothing more better than to make you crack / But you're really just tryna get your dreams on track / And you know in the end it'll be ok / Cause all that really matters are the steps you take / And everything else falls into place

All right / Yeah yeah / We gonna get it / Where we live

It's a Liberty Walk / Walk / Walk / Say goodbye to the people who tied you up/ It's a Liberty Walk / Walk / Walk/ [INDECIPHERABLE] Li-Li-Liberty Liberty Li-Li-Liberty Liberty / Walk

Don't like what you do / Don't take the abuse / Prove to the truth / Come on that means yooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

Wow before I laughed at this "movement" and the drug addict criminal simpletons that supported it,but now that Miley is onboard I need to rethink my position.

  • Yeah I am totally on board now. I hope she does a free concert at Zuccotti soon!!

"Also, what the hell is a "Liberty Walk?"" I think its a marketing tie in to her short shorts.

  • brooklynRick

  • sleepswitheyesopen

Jeez Miley! Maybe you're the reason Radiohead didn't show up to play at OWS. Also, nice try claiming you're a pot smoker, trying to gain cred with the kids.

Beg to differ on one point: it's always a bummer when a musical act co-opts a political slogan to sell more copies of a single rather than coming up with a new catchy turn of phrase.  It's actually to Miley's credit that she came up with this (admittedly meaningless) title rather than just swiping something from the Occupy movement.

This song is unlistenable, true...but she's on the right side and at least made an effort to push against the boundaries of the corporate box which has sheltered her for nearly her whole life.  That should count for something.
