Ethan Hawke Is Bringing Back Before Sunrise, Will It Come To NYC?

First of all, ready to feel old? Before Sunrise came out about 16 years ago. Exactly nine years after that, the follow-up Before Sunset was released, and now it's been almost nine more years since that happened. So naturally, the movie's star Ethan Hawke is thinking of revisiting the characters in a third movie. Fun fact: the actor was 25 in the first film, and would be around 43 when the next one comes out.

To recap (spoiler alerts!): Hawke's character Jesse first met Julie Delpy's character Celine after a break-up. They spend a night together in Vienna, but at the end, he leaves to return to New York City, with vague plans to re-meet in six months. Nine years later they meet again, in Paris, but during their time apart Jesse has gotten married and had a son, who is also in New York—again, he returns there at the end. So where will the newest film bring them—Paris or New York City (where Celine also lived for some time, at Broadway and East 11th Street)? There are no clues yet, Hawke tells EW:

"All of three of us [Hawke, Delpy, and director Richard Linklater] have been having similar feelings that we’re ready to revisit those characters. There’s nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again, so we’re really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try write it this year.”
Hopes are that they'll come here, with EW noting that a "New York City reunion would be fitting, as the story in Sunset about him seeing her on his wedding day slays me every time)." For the third installment, we're going to recommend Before Manhattanhenge.

I really hope this doesn't happen. The first two were insufferable enough as is.

Says you. The majority of critics + general audience loved them.

Which version is going to have Khan and which one will have Clubber Lang?

these were good movies.  at the end of the last one, i didn't think he went back to nyc. it would be interesting to see how it turned out for them.

  • Yes, he definitely didn't make it back to New York. In fact the last line of Before Sunset is, "Baby, you're going to miss that plane..."

The first movie took place in Vienna, not Paris

Fantastic movies, and such a rare format, where we actually see a romance develop on screen for the whole movie. Lost in Translation is the only other similar movie I can think of off the top of my head.

  • These were both actually really good movies. Especially for anyone who's fallen in love while traveling.
