East Villagers Oppressed By IHOP's Overwhelming Bacon Odor!

Mmmm, bacon (bonchan/Shutterstock).

Hard as it is to believe, apparently not everyone digs the smell of bacon! At least not when it permanently permeates their homes. Neighbors of the new bouncer-boasting IHOP on 14th Street are sick of the smell of "rancid bacon" constantly pouring into their apartments. Also? They don't like the restaurant's ventilation system.

"There can be times at three or four in the morning when you feel like you’re in the kitchen with them," neighbor Mary Beth Powers says. "There is no relief." She's even worried it is ruining her furniture. "It smells like rancid bacon. I just imagine it: a film of crap on my furniture, on my rugs, on my walls. I actually wonder, is this being soaked up in my apartment?"

And the bacon isn't the only problem! Powers also has issues with the restaurant's noisy ventilation system and she isn't the only one. Other neighbors have complained so much there have now been building meetings about it (and, already closed Department of Building complaints). One went so far as to make not one but two videos to show how non-stop the noise is:

That does seem noisy. But more to the point, note that the videographer also complains about the smell of bacon. In the second video, which is shot at 6:30 a.m., they comment that, "The smell of bacon that we have, all the time. I’m wondering now if this is going to be our life forever."

We understand they are upset but, uh, problems we could probably learn to live with? A perma-bacon scent.

  • Having worked at an iHop for many years, NO - there is no escape from the bacon smell.  I am a MEAT lover and iHop ruined the smell of bacon for me.

East Sixth Street smells of curry.

At least you have a choice of life-ruining odors.
  • Mmmm curry.

Are you sure it's bacon? (What they're serving at IHOP, that is)
  • Well, If you decide to move, it shouldn't be hard to sell your house. With the smell of bacon, anyone would love to buy it.

I'm surprised nobody has called IHOP anti-Semitic for this yet.

the EV residents should hang out with all the UES residents in close proximity to the meat-scented Shake Shack on 86th

Guess the Lower East Side isn't kosher any more.

What occupied the space before and what hours did it operate?

It was vacant.  235 East 14th Street is a 7-story residential building that was erected in 1988 as affordable housing.  There are 16 rental units; the last listing I found included mention of "shared outdoor space".  Well, that's gone now.   IHOP is located in a first-floor commercial unit. I can't imagine what life is like for the families who live above the restaurant.

Fuck 'em. Move to the suburbs

    Exactly.

If anybody out there is concerned as we are about the quality of life for New York residents... Umm, it's NYC. Don't expect fresh air and quiet, expect odd smells and lots of noise.

Except there are city limits to the noise level that can be produced by AC/Heating units. I would also think the smell of bacon means they have a faulty ventilation system.

    hope those residents aren't vegans/vegetarians!

I love me some bacon but living downstream from any restaurant like this can be nauseating.

The fan is basically white noise.  It should be unnoticeable after a while and will probably drown out the noise of the neighborhood drunks.

If you have a bacon addiction and need to overcome it (for health reasons or whatever), get a job at a fast food joint or cheap chain that cranks out bacon.  Eventually it will gross you out.
  • Dead Himmler
It might not be coming from IHOP. It could be from the increased police presence in the area.
