Photos, Videos: Thousands Join Occupy Wall Street March Across Brooklyn Bridge

Foley Square is extremely packed with protesters at the moment, some initial guesstimates put the crowd somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 to 10,000. It's so crowded that it's difficult to move, and a few protesters have been arrested—one was bleeding from the mouth. There are reports that an NYPD officer injured his ankle; it's unclear what caused the injury. The police are not letting protesters into Foley Square from most sides, and arresting those who spill off the sidewalks across the street from the square. The Other 99 is operating a live video stream from the rally.

One protester at the park says, "I can actually feel the ground shaking." The original plan was for the rally to march over the Brooklyn Bridge, and we've heard nothing to suggest that isn't happening. We'll update with more information as the protest unfolds.

Update 6:10 p.m.: The march is underway, but it's proceeding very slowly because the NYPD has set up kettle nets along the route and they're not letting protesters though, except through a small number of openings.

And City Councilman Juamaane Williams just Tweeted, "I have just been #handcuffed & #arrested by the #NYPD, practicing #civildisobedience with #OccupyWallStreet & the #99percent." His Tweet before that was "We are sitting on the approach to the #BrooklynBridge, standing up for the #99percent and for #equality." You may recall that Williams was arrested after the West Indian-Amercian Day Parade by apparently overzealous cops who didn't believe he was a Council member.

Here's video of the crowd at Foley Square:

Update 6:25 p.m.: CBS2 is streaming live aerial footage of the entrance to the bridge. CBS's @LouYoungNY is reporting that Foley Sq protesters "are only being allowed to march north, i.e. away from Bk Bridge." At this point, it's unclear if the march is being allowed onto the pedestrian walkway on the bridge. The protesters, as they wind their way through the streets, are chanting, "Who took the money? Wall Street! And who's gonna pay? Wall Street!"

The Other 99 livestream just showed the side of a WPIX 11 News van, on which someone had written graffiti "TELL THE TRUTH." Some marchers are worried that the NYPD is planning to trap them by the bridge and make mass arrests. By some estimates, approximately 100 protesters have been arrested already, including Councilmember Williams, and have been loaded onto buses by the bridge.

Update 6:38 p.m.: The massing march is proceeding across the pedestrian walkway on the Brooklyn Bridge as planned. Thilman tells us, "Thousands are pouring onto the Brooklyn Bridge, many carrying battery-powered 'candles.' " There are unofficial reports that the Brooklyn-bound roadway is closed to cars. It's unclear where they're headed on the other side (Junior's, anyone?), but the protesters say the bridge march is intended to "culminate in a festival of light as we mark the two-month anniversary of the Occupy movement, and our commitment to shining light into our broken economic and political system."

Update 6:50 p.m.: Now, there are projections against buildings (including a city building and the Verizon building) that say "We are the 99!%" and then changes to "Look around, you are part of a global uprising! Happy birthday Occupy Movement"! Then it flashes the word "Occupy" and names every city that has an Occupy movement. It's an energizing moment—Thilman says, "I've never seen everyone so jubilant."

Cars are honking support to the marchers:

And Bucky Turco says the first wave of marchers have made it halfway across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Update 7:30 p.m.: Thilman tells us the crowd was singing, "Happy birthday, Dear Occupy." He adds there doesn't seem to be a police presence on the bridge and that he overheard a man say to his wife/companion, "...a crowded protest is no excuse for an inappropriate touch!"

Update 9:30 p.m.: Here are some videos of the the projections:

Three cheers for the OWS, judging by the comments the Anti American Gutless, Spineless, Cowardly right is in their usual state of FEAR and COWARDICE, their seeing REAL Americans do real things and DEMAND real action has these bozos on the right confused.

First OWS is thinking NOT allowed on the right.  Second, OWS is Acting, the right believes sipping coffee and using bumper sticker is the answer. Third this really confuses the anal retentive right, the OWS HEROES aren't stating a position, and with out a position the Anti American COWARDS and Traitors have NO response, to validate this I offer different people giving different views on the OWS, and the ANTI American corporate OWNED RACIST republican can not understand this, as these are FREE THINKERS, on the right they are TOLD what to say.

Further proof of Ignorance is bliss, listen to the Choir Girl hannity that bitch is on the rag worse then any woman in her ninth month. Olliely, here is a ass wipe that can't even report what he sees, he thinks because he was in the back room doing face zipper time that people can't see the truth. Then you come to the king of the comedy hour the ill informed Brain Dead RACIST and Nazi the Ignorant COWARD limpdickbaugh the DRUG ADDICT.

So to the Heroes of OWS I say good job, now lets plan a TEN MILLION peoples March on Washington DC this summer, start identifying the Transportation systems now the Highways now, remember you tie up DC you will affect 5 States and then take over the CONGRESS and NOT move.

"...and they're not letting protesters th(r)ough, except through a small number of openings."
So, they are letting protesters through, which makes this sentence moot.

Being that it was Foley Square, I was hoping to see Mankind or Cactus Jack or Dude Love come flying off the top of a building and land a mean elbow on somebody.  Sigh.
  • Does anyone remember when the AFL-CIO hardhats used to bash the yippies? Now they're so pathetic and non-issue that they're willing to latch on to these vagrants to drum up support for their dying cause.

also - TIM POOL? that was fucking awesome! we got a new way of doing things it seems.

OWS won today. Sorry, shut-in facists. But, SSI checks should be in your mailbox today, at least that's something, eh?
  • seattlesnow
what did they win, they look cold to me
  • jacqueline66
They are winning. How's that? Just like the riots in Chicago under Mayor Daley sometimes you have to shake things up a bit to bring attention to the issue. When you have more say in what the banks and government do with your life, you can thank OWS for that.
  • seattlesnow
naw I'm good, I can deal with life w/o the shake up specially like this with no direction
  • jacqueline66
I could too. What's your plan? What are you going to do about it?  You clearly don't know their direction. Have you tried to look it up? Keith Olberman did a piece on it...if you are interested or you can sit back and plead ignorance.

  • Amber
So wait, are they rich or are they unemployed bums? Can the OWS critics make up their mind?
  • woffles wu
they can't, because it's a mixture of all types of people. that's what makes this a fun game! how many lame stereotypes can you crank out before the buzzer? (see below)

on a lighter note, i love the claim that people uniting for a cause is considered "a lot of free time on one's hands" by someone writing yet another tired, worn-out anti-OWS comment on an internet message board. i bet this was just the first of many our friend here wrote tonight.

keep fighting the good fight guys, you're really swaying hearts and minds
  • shocktheday
It's a mixture of perpetually unemployed bums, rich trust fund kids who have no concept of earned wealth, union leeches who will latch onto any movement that sucks the money from the rich/middle class and taxpayers, failed musicians with student loans, failed artists with student loans, freelance writers who want free healthcare, sprinkled with the truly disenfranchised.
  • unroar
Do you have a disparaging label for every single one of your fellow Americans. I was thinking of putting you in the angry asshole category personally.
  • shocktheday
Not all of them, only those who fail to grasp the concept that demonizing the top earners and redistributing their wealth will only discourage people from realizing their fullest potential.  Also those who fail to realize that personal debt is an obligation by choice, demanding others pay for it is nonsensical. You'd be an asshole too if you had to pass by loiterers who call you sheep because of your employment status and who you work for.
  • jacqueline66
I have no sympathy for you because  you have a blanket statement-generalization for everyone and give no one the benefit of the doubt. It's not the worst thing in the world being called "sheep" and a very lame excuse for choosing to be an asshole.

In my life I routinely fall under a lot of categories that people would easily find fault with and quite often do, especially being a woman, even though they are all contradictory and none describe the real me but rather than perpetuate the negativity and bitterness like a bad social virus, I check myself and follow Ghandi's advice. "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

    Peace.
  • shocktheday
It was not a blanket statement, in fact I took the time to polarize the typical groups that constituted the majority of occupiers at the park. Those who are perpetually unemployed by choice are not bums ?
  • jacqueline66
But lets talk about individuals and stick to what the OWS is about. Solidarity. It's all of us being screwed by the red, white and blue dick the government is banging us with. Credit to George Carlin.

Just be glad SOMEONE is doing SOMETHING in this country to give all of us our voice back.

If you don't know what the OWS is about, here is a statement. I know a lot of people don't realize this oddly enough.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

United we stand, divided we fall.  It's your choice. This is history in the making.
  • shocktheday
Why I singled out certain types of people from the movement ...

About the events that led us to where we are today, I wholeheartedly agree with you that the government failed us, but where many disagree with me is greed not only seized the banks, it seized a large segment of our population. A person making $50K should not have bought two or three homes; personal investments should be through accrued assets, not debt where the rest of us have to absorb if you decide to walk away from it.

As it stands, many of us pay premiums for healthcare, increasing deductibles, co-pays, emergency room supplemental charges, while many abuse the system and use Medicaid carte blanche which is fine to an extent. Now as OWS proposes, we potentially have to help pay towards a socialized healthcare system which in my opinion will provide a lesser quality of care and take away funds from development of new medicine.

I have $200K in student loan debts for a degree I don't use as I've made a career change and make no attempt to blame anyone or ask anyone for help in paying this off. Even if OWS were successful in convincing people for student loan bailouts, I would not agree with it for I know passing along debt is what led us to this economic status and I know it will result in higher rates for the students who had nothing to do with any of this. Many in the movement seem to regret the choices they've made and don't want the responsibility for paying for those choices.

Public sector unions and some private sector unions make this almost an unlivable city. We talk about the rich and middle class not paying their fare share but look at who's taking more than fair share in this state. Go look at what percentage of our tax revenues go towards paying for less than helpful civil employees and their pensions.
  • supercomf
"A person making $50K should not have bought two or three homes."

They were preyed on, and banks did it like eating m&m's. And then turned around and bet against those same people they sold to. And "2-3 homes" really? you exaggerate to somehow believe the rest of the world thinks in your "I'm gonna pull one over on everyone" terms.

"while many abuse the system and use Medicaid carte blanche which is fine to an extent."

"many" is a convenient number... people use the emergency room as their primary care facility, because they have no job, no access to education, and health insurance cost is through the roof, and for the poor it's garbage. No proof that a single payer system would lead to lousy care, plus you can keep whatever fantastic plan you are on.

"Many in the movement seem to regret the choices they've made and don't want the responsibility for paying for those choices."

There you go with your convenient "many" again. Loan bailout is a mass response to the bank bailout that led to more fees for customers, while still receiving ridiculous bonuses. If my loans were forgiven, I'd buy a house, as would "many" of "us," and boom when you solve the housing problem, you solve the whole damn mess.

    "almost an unlivable city."

stop it now. Take the money out of politics, and your tax dollars will go to what YOU want them to go to.

And guess what, nobody is hating on anyone. They're calling out those that are profiting, while others are being bled dry. The only hating is you, because you just never knew love.

So go for it, give me some hate. Or not, because I ain't judging you.
  • shocktheday
WTF does preyed on mean ? Were mortgage brokers knocking on their doors and putting a gun to their head to buy a 3500 sq ft home in locations where almost 100% of people are on fixed income and where the homes cost half the price the year before ? You receive introductory rate offers everyday, it's your responsibility to decide what you can afford and will it pay off in the long run.

It's not an unlivable city ? Middle income are flocking out of this city, replaced with lower earning recent graduates. If you're a homeowner, you must have seen your real estate taxes at least double since Bloomberg took office.
  • jacqueline66
Preyed~ I think it's a grey area. You both are right. Again, I'm not an expert but even the experts agree. They did however forclose on the homes illegally and to so many that they damaged this country. I do remember a time when lenders were all encouraging me to go for it and would lie for me, fix my credit etc. etc. So I can guarantee a lot of those loans were illegal to begin with. Why? Because the sales people were getting greedy and they had nothing to stop them.

To me IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS AT FAULT as long as it's not the top 1%. They have some things to answer for.

Here is a message from Occupy:
    movement.....
The U.S. Census says the number of children living in poverty in the
U.S. rose by 1 million last year. Nearly 1 in 3 children, 33% now live
in households considered poor. At the same time the 400 richest people
in America – our nation’s oligarchs – have never had it so good, they
control more wealth than 150 million Americans. 400 people with more wealth than 150 million. Many children in poverty so they can have billions. Sickening. We simply will not allow this to continue. We are rising up. Re-read it. Share it. We are growing stronger every day

  • I never realized this many people were ready to revolt against the "greatest country in the world", so we are told.  Ready for early retirement, I gave up on this country 2 years ago and moved to central america.  I hope you can change "politics" versus common sense, as our policital leader don't seem to have the latter.  Any normal human being wants to help others but socialism does not work.  Take care and good luck with your quest, but please identify what you revolution is trying to change.  It is not clear to me and maybe others.
  • supercomf
expensive city to live in, yes... unlivable? It's one of the greatest cities on earth.

yes preyed on. Clinton encourgaed putting more people into their own homes, Bush continued it, reduced restrictions for doing this and the banks salivated. The former prez's as well as the folks told they could own a home expected responsible behavior, nobody had to force those banks kicking and screaming to make these loans... They advised people they could afford it. Not being a realtor, banker or finance guy, I expect responsible behavior when I pay these folks to do their jobs. if I can't afford it, tell me, or please help me understand. Then the banks, knowing these folks couldn't pay, or these houses were garbage, swung around, sold off all these misguided mortgages and bet against the housing market. Crashed everything, then got rewarded.
  • jacqueline66
The only people who have time to be in the park are unemployed, retired, people who work from their laptops and wealthy etc. What do you expect? I'm grateful to them that they are doing something worthwhile with their lives and not sitting on the couch at home.

I have never known anyone on $50k owning 2-3 homes. I've invested in real estate in several states.

We need to take care of our sick children and elderly. Period. No excuses. If other countries can provide maternity leave so can we. They are not funding wars and prisons that are out of line with the budget.

I have a feeling that you may be buying into the excuses rather than seeing the solutions and multiple options available. I'm no economic expert but I know a bad deal when I see one and this country has given us all a rotten deal.  Whether you agree with everything or not, we need to stick together and change direction. If you feel the same way about the government as the 99% then get on board and bring your ideas to the table. I can't do much because I work but I don't have the heart to knock a movement for trying so hard to change things for all of us and I give them credit for not excluding people. What I see in other countries is that they are successful because they treat people with respect first and we don't. It's a vicious cycle. Our country blames everyone else and bails out corporations but does nothing for it's people. That's got to change. Sorry Im so tired. Hope that all made some sense.
  • shocktheday
Wait a minute ... I passed by the park EVERYDAY ... I did NOT see any signs asking to take care of sick children and the elderly. I've also read extensively the posts on Occupy Wall Streets FB page and website. A vast majority is for personal gain (student loan forgiveness, foreclosure freeze, living wage regardless of employment) which is okay, but let's just clear that up. We most definitely have to take care of the elderly ensure all sick children are taken care of and receive the best medical care no matter of their ability to pay. Socialized medicine will marginalize the care we receive. You will get a predefined list of care you will receive based on cost and given we will need to pay for all Americans, that list will be vastly shortened than what we're allowed today. I'm for creating a government sponsored health insurance fund for the 45 million without health insurance; even for the 15 million illegal aliens who contribute to society. What I don't want is government and OWS taking away my private health insurance.

Yes, there were many people overextending themselves and taking on multiple mortgages as investment. Also, many buying huge homes they could not afford based on a highly predatory ARM which the FEDS encouraged.
  • jacqueline66
I'm the one who thinks this country should make sure it's children and elderly are taken care of. OWS said: "They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization."  This effects children, elderly, and those with compromised health issues. This effects all of us. I say children and elderly because it's the one thing I think everyone can agree on.

I am not familiar with all the details of health care and maybe I should be. Who is taking away your private insurance? I've heard you are still going to be able to keep your insurance. Did that change?

OWS says: "They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage." That's all. I think other people in the movement have varying opinions.

The point is to stick together 99%. United we stand. Getting bogged down in the details is futile. Nothing in their statement I disagree with and I don't see enough people supporting some of what they talk about like the animals for instance. It's getting a little difficult to understand who wants what so I just stick to their statement don't worry about all the poster signs you see, and if you disagree with people in the movement do so respectfully. We need to learn to support each other. The point is not to use the movement for selfish means or to find out who is right or wrong. The point of the movement is to gather together as one and move forward to claim our rights back from the government and the corporations that own it.

I'm not a fan of the tea party but I heard that the two groups OWS and the Tea Party are trying to join forces. I think that's the point of ALL of this. Remember the K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Silly principle.

Stick to what is right and true and  good and don't stray from that.
  • shocktheday
All indications are they want to model after France, Canada and UK for Universal Healthcare. Having known people who live in these countries, waits for procedures can be long. For instance, having a stent insertion takes months in these countries because of the backlog. You get prescribed the least expensive generic medicine first and gradually prescribed better medicine if the prescriptions are not working; this is a cost control.

The statistics about children are atrocious. This a problem I think we can all rally behind, but is overshadowed by student loan forgiveness and mortgage relief. If we don't fix the current expenditure structures, any new revenue from tax increases will just go to wasteful spending.

Besides Tea Party being bankrolled by Billionaires, the fundamental ideas between the two will not marry together. Tea Party wants tax cuts and OWS wants tax increases for rich to fund their objectives. I think most Americans fall between these two ideas which is why I'm currently backing Ron Paul; disengage from world affairs, eliminate unnecessary government who have failed us and serve no purpose, free healthcare for uninsured (not sure how well that will work), opposes most trade agreements, and audit the Federal Reserve who is depreciating the value of our dollar.

As it stands, both of our kids will be paying for this generations bank bailouts.

But yet, you refuse to accept it.
