Video: Zuccotti Park Security Guard Calls Cameraman "Faggot," Gets Fired
Intrepid video gadfly Joey Boots was down at Zuccotti Park yesterday when it was closed to protesters after its surprise cleaning. During day, as the the Mayor and protesters wrangled in court, the park was heavily guarded by the NYPD and a new element: private security guards wearing reflective vests. In an attempt to find out if the security guards were on the Brookfield Properties payroll, Joey Boots went around asking them questions. For his trouble, he got called a "faggot" by a very stupid man:
And now he's fired. Matthew Cherry, a spokesman for Brookfield, tells us, "His comment was offensive and inexcusable, and we have a policy of zero tolerance for such behavior. In accordance with our code of conduct he's been terminated from his work with Brookfield." Cherry clarified that the unidentified man was a security subcontractor; when asked what company was doing the subcontracting and whether it was still under contract with Brookfield, Cherry declined further comment.

So what's wrong with being called a 'FAGGOT'. . . if in-fact, -one is a FAGGOT?!

Because it's a slur, like the n word is a slur. Calling people slur names is fine if you want to look like a jerk in general but nobody wants a someone who looks like a jerk working for them. It's unprofessional.

OK- I think I sort of get it. So, do you then think it's acceptable when making such a reference, (say, during a TV interview, or some such-) by instead, using the. . . 'F-word' in describing someone of the homosexual persuasion?!
nomadnewyork
So what the guy should have said is "Gay guy, your fly is down", although why he felt it necessary to point out the homosexual persuasion of the guy is not clear to me. I'm pretty sure that Joey Boots already knows that he is gay and doesn't need that pointed out to him.
"Excuse me sir, but your fly is down" without referring to his sexual orientation would appear to me to be the appropriately polite and professional thing to communicate.

I'm not completely sure if I understand the question, Nobody in a network TV interview would ever use the f- word and anyone on a cable interview would use it at his or her own peril. That doesn't apply to offensive comedy shows.
I'm no big expert, but I do know how to be polite. The polite term for people of the homosexual persuasion is usually "gay" which can be used for men or women but for women, you would more likely use "lesbian". Gay people may, among themselves use the word "queer" but that's not a word for you or I to use around gay people unless they are our good friends and we know that they will not be offended by it.

Wow! What an 'E-word'. . . for a Gothamist Commentator! <-(Excursus!)
Gadea
The guy was wrong for calling a faggot. However, the way things are today, it's just too bad he got fired.

When I'm at work, I behave professionally and watch my speech because my speech reflects on my employer and they can fire me for making them look bad.
The first guy I spoke to in the suit with the white hair I was told after posting the video is Ralph Blasi, head of security for Brookfield and the guy's supervisor is Pat Devlin, a retired sgt. from the 112th precint in Forest Hills. As for any editing there was nothing but "dead time" edited out and a battery change in my flip cam. I never went beyond asking them simple questions. Although I hate seeing anyone lose their job in this economy, I am pleased that Brookfield has a zero tolerance policy that they followed through on quickly but I would like to know what action the security company has taken. I am told they are mostly all retired/off-duty cops and not Brookfield's usual security contractor, Mulligan Security.

But Joey, was your fly actually open?

So freedom of speech is pretty much stifled across the board there....

You have freedom of speech but that doesn't protect you from the consequences that arise from what you say.
