Entire OWS Library Taken By Dept. Of Sanitation, But NOT Destroyed!

As we originally reported at 4:15 a.m., the NYPD and Department of Sanitation tossed the entire contents of the Occupy Wall Street library into some dumpsters. At that time, the library's Twitter account transmitted this message: "The NYPD has destroyed everything at #OccupyWallStreet and put it all in dumpsters, including the #OWSLibrary. It's time to #ShutDownNYC." The library had more than 5,000 books, and recently Patti Smith funded a more permanent structure (pictured) to house it in.

Even though the city has been telling protesters that things would be stored in a Department of Sanitation facility at 650 West 57th Street in Manhattan, and could be picked up after noon, many believed and reported that the books had been destroyed. When we called the DoS this afternoon it wasn't looking good, the woman who answered the phone simply told us, "my boss isn't sure where the books are." And earlier today the library's blog had updated saying tonight at 6 p.m., "writers and readers from across New York City will gather in Liberty Plaza to reoccupy the space and rebuild the People’s Library."

But alas, good news has just arrived via the Mayor's Twitter account: the books are "safely stored" at the West 57th Street garage, and can be picked up tomorrow. They even provided photographic evidence. But how about the book shelter that Smith provided?

Didn't something like this happen in Germany in the 1930's right before the Hitlerites started murdering Jews? Oh wait, that's right, the Nazis burned the books they confiscated. NYC government only confiscated books, they did not burn them.

Shows you what strong air pollution laws can really do, huh?
  • All of a sudden people care about a library.  I'm just sayin'
  • JacksBack72
A friggin' LIBRARY??!  So how about a Hospital; a Fire Department; a Police Force; a Public Tranportation Department; a Judcial System; a Corrections facility. . .
Just what NYC needs;  a 'subcultural Subcity! Smarten-up assholes!

Geez- I do hope that the Bloomberg Administration and the NYS Judicial System- see to it that protestors who are arrested, are kept in the jail/court/probationary system for the rest of their natural lives on the planet! Freedom is not 'free'. . . and Protesting should not be 'free' either!

Yeah! We really gotta fix that darn Constitution...
  • JacksBack72
Don't worry about that. . . O-Ba-Ma is fixing it, one Executive Order at a time!
  • SpideySense
Shades of Berlin in the 1930s.
  • Yep.
  • theevilerone
Right. Because the Nazis let everyone pick up their property the next day. Get over yourself.
  • Detex
    These guys are Nazis Walter?

No, Donny, these men are nihilists. There's nothing to be afraid of.
  • Oh stuff and nonsense.
  • sxe60
We have books where can we send them?
  • theevilerone
    To your local library.
  • chuzzlewit
they took the books because they couldn't figure out how to slash the funding, fire the librarians, and lock the doors like they've done to the rest of the libraries in town.
  • theevilerone
And what's the biggest tax revenue driver in the city? The financial sector. Insert discussion of biting the hand that feeds you here.

I hear Bloomberg yelling, "Get off my lawn!"
  • Big problem, its not his lawn.
  • Stop taking drugs. It will help.
  • Let me guess, they had a stockpile of the Communist Manifesto.
  • No more free food...wah wah!  No more pan handling wah wah!  My question now is who gets to keep all the loot you borrowed???
  • I am not involved with OWS. But it is DONATED food, the protesters are part of a gift economy.
  • Pompous idiocy in all its glory, yet again!

Thanks for reminding us what that looks like so consistently, Michael.

I will judge how well I raise my kids by the degree to which they represent the exact opposite of you.
  • Probably Michael Moore.
  • Bye guys.....See ya.  Go home.  Get a job.
  • wow. it never ends huh?
  • Elderta2
Nope. Believe me, I've been around here a long time. It never ends.
  • AaronRed99
I figured this library would be all digital.
  • Don't they know that every public library is the people's library?  Better selection too.

Oh wait, I forgot.  Public libraries use goverment tracking technology to monitor what you're reading.  Can't have that in our FREEDOM PARKS.
  • lexluthor666
Libraries are part of the system and financed by the man, through the man's taxes. Obviously, those taxes need to be raised, for the benefit of the system or something, even though we reject the system and are building our own.
  • Worse yet, actual public libraries contain actual books that are not approved of by "Working Group" committees.  Some of these books contain actual facts about the actual world, and ideas that don't come out of Noam Chomsky's ass.  Exposure to such material can permanently destroy the Occupier's ego boundaries, not to mention spreading disastrous ideas about deodorant and indoor plumbing.
  • 5 of my friends got raped and mugged there last night, and this is how the NYPD responds?
  • Detex
5 of YOUR friends! Holy crap! they must have been raping people left and right! It is comments like this that make the group loose legitimacy!
  • Amber
Get out of here with your nasty jokes, you're a disgusting excuse for a human being.
  • Excuse me? You had FIVE friends all get raped and mugged last night there? Go on...
  • So you should be happy there will be no more occupation!

I don't know--some people saw books being destroyed, ti seems.
  • were these the same people who saw snipers?
  • aloveston
    Probably not.
  • Militant Conformist
I was a bit concerned when I saw these guys by the park

    Nice.
  • lexluthor666
You mean the NYPD aren't the same as the Gestapo? But my friends at Zuccotti had told me they're "what fascism looks like"!
  • man, your constant wit is astounding.
  • Man, your likeness to a cockroach just keeps increasing, except you get stepped on this afternoon.  GO HOME!  GET A JOB!  Feel free to protest on your free time, but stop mooching!
  • Amber
"Feel free to keep protesting." "GO HOME!"
    Yeah, not hypocritical at all.
