Mayor Bloomberg: OWS Eviction Decision Was "Mine And Mine Alone"

201111_bloomtalks.jpg

"The final decision," to have the NYPD evict Occupy Wall Street from Zuccotti Park, "was mine and mine alone," Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference this morning in which he tried to explain the whirlwind of activity on Wall Street last night, all of which he says was done at the initial request of Brookfield Properties. According to Bloomberg the "action was taken at this time of day [after 1 a.m.] to reduce confrontation." Bloomberg doesn't imply this will kill the OWS movement, however. "For two months they have been allowed to use sleeping bags and tents. Now they will have to use the power of their arguments."

Bloomberg said that the city had planned to reopen the park at 8 a.m., and in fact let a few protesters back in (without sleeping bags or tents) but then closed the park off again when a restraining order was put against the city. "Because of the court order, which we have not seen, we are keeping the the park closed until we can clarify."

"In the future protesters and the general public will be allowed to go there to exercise their First Amendment rights," Bloomberg said. "But they are not allowed to use tents and sleeping bags" to do so. "The First Amendment gives New Yorkers the right to speak out, but it does not give them the right to camp out in a tent." He also emphasized that "no right is absolute."

Bloomberg said the move happened now (as opposed to waiting for winter to push the protesters out naturally) as "the health of the public and our first responders must be our first priority." "We could not wait until someone got killed...we must never be afraid to insist on compliance with our laws."

As for two of the other burning questions of the night? The mayor explained the removal of the media as "routine" and "for their own protection." And the tents, sleeping bags and other things in the park have been removed by Brookfield and the Sanitation Department to storage facility on 57th and the West Side Highway. They say that if you go and describe what you are missing, with ID, they will sort through it (assuming people don't all claim the same things) let you take them back in the next few days.

But don't try and bring stuff back to the park. "We are going to reserve the right, either on a random basis or if there is suspicion, to check bags. [Protesters] can not carry in big objects to set up and recreate the situation that became so intolerable."

You can read the mayor's full statement here.

    Fact Check

Diana Taylor (Bloombergs GF) sits on the board Brookfield properties who owns Zuccotti Park.
Brookfield Properties has recieved $700000 in gov funding since 9/11 despite being a multi-billion dollar corp.

Obama just approved $169 billion dollar federal loan for a wind farm with Brookfield property ties.  This just happened 2 weeks ago.

Obama as with other ranking Dems have supported OWS.  Brookfield pretended to, now the deal is done and it's time for the OWS folks to leave the park.  Pillow talk between Bloomberg and Taylor.

Diane Talyor is a managing director of fund manager Wolfensohn Capital Partners (they are tied with Brookfield as well) and was just named Citigroup director who has recieved $45 billion of stimulus dollars in less than a year.

Are you supporters feeling like pawns yet?

And you supporters forcing folks who had been there since the inception, to move their tents, to allow for the segerated tents, for women, transgender, and homosexuals smells of the government game called Eminent Domain.

The chefs take the cake (no pun intended) when they protested their long thankless hours to only have the homless come and eat their fine cusine.  I would have to say folks living on the street have to be part of the 99%.

Used and misquided, get the facts then post you can check mine.  The OWS folks just help the rich get even richer while hurting the local bussiness around Zuccotti park you know some of the other 99%
  • peanutbrittle
Also, it's time to evict Bloomberg, impeach bloomberg, fire bloomberg, etc.  This is a statement to the public, a plea from him to be alleviated of his duties - he is telling us he does not want his job or the responsibility of representing the American people.

    #occupyBloomberg
  • peanutbrittle
I think the fact that this discussion is taking place means we all owe a big "thank you!" to OWS.  Never before have we seen such a sweeping interest in making the system work for the people.  It is OWS, and NOT Bloomberg, that we have to thank for our eyes and mouths being opened.
  • hotstepper
    prosecute Bloomberg.
  • TeddyNYC
It looks like Jean Quan, the first female mayor of Oakland, CA, finally loaned her balls to Bloomberg.
  • thank you bloomberg!!!!!!!!!!!! definitely voting for you now.
  • So at least we know he doesn't plan on running for a fourth term.
  • theevilerone
He could still get elected if he wanted to. The rest of the politicians in this city are such clowns that he looks good by comparison.
  • proudliberal1947
Is this ASS WIPE playing the people go being Stupid?

Has anyone out there been paying attention, this was a COORDINATED NATIONAL move, please play the TIMES and allow for the Time Zones and see if I am NOT right.

This ASS WIPE is saying look at me, I am and you are a ASS WIPE that SOLD out to the MONEY PEOPLE..

If your Stupid believe and listen to the ASS WIPE and SELL OUT bought and Paid for Scum Bag they call Mayor, if you have a sense of Intelligence start comparing TIME LINES and co ordination efforts.

Central  Park sounds REAL GOOD for a Occupation and lots and lots of trees to AMBUSH the police, yeah I know night scopes, oops things go bump in the dark and night scopes do not pick up everything ROFL.
  • Yes there is definitely a pattern nationally and it is very suspicious.  This is a good opportunity for any real journalists out there to dig something up.
  • proudliberal1947
Sorry there are NO REAL Investigative JOURNALIST, just the ones that are TOLD what to and HOW to WRITE and make sure it is ALWAYS Slanted they way the person Dictating the story says it has to be slanted.
It is all about Fantasy nd the PAY CHECK, just ask the BOZOS that call themselves ROFL, reporters on raw story, here are a bunch of I told you we only allow what we are told to allow, think of my POAY CHECK, real ASS WIPES and THIN SKINNED.

  • Yes honest journalism is in extremely short supply and the corporate media rules the roost.
  • Bloomberg is an icon for the 1%.  He is their mayor.  Public safety is a lame excuse for being the bully for the Plutonomy.
    http://www.frontporchrepublic....
Keep him busy OWS!  Keep that guy up all night for a long time.
  • Public safety?  If that is what dear old Mr. Bloomberg is so concerned with he would spend more time and attention on the outer boroughs and poor neighborhoods around the city
  • BoogieDown
    Hear, hear.
  • ixvnyc
Michael Bloomberg is breaking the law (nothing new). His actions are illegal, but of course, as a billionaire he is above the law. If you support the rule of law, you must be on the side of OWS in this. http://www.salon.com/2011/11/1...
  • EdwardAmame
    ha!

"A military style raid on peaceful protesters camped out in the shadow of
Wall Street, ordered by a cold ruthless billionaire who bought his way
    into the mayor’s office."

That is a perfect description, thanks for the link!
  • davidsage
So far I have seen more Presidential qualities in Mayor Bloomberg than in any of the candidates currently running for President, whether Republican or Democrat.  It would actually make me proud of President of the United States once again.
  • pendejito
Yes presidential qualities, like breaking the law and running a third term. If you want a president like that, might I suggest you move to Venezuela or Russia where term limits are extended all the time.  Bending term limits is SOOO American, sure it makes you feel proud to be one.

    You're an idiot.
  • I would vote for a kangaroo before I would vote for someone who obviously cares nothing for our Constitution. Our right to assemble. Our freedom off speech. How is this clown presidential material? He is not.
  • theevilerone
You can assemble without camping. You can have free speech without a makeshift commune. The landowners have rights too.
  • Presidential qualities?  Like Bush qualities?
  • Militant Conformist
Good morning everyone.  I have been a bit busy, so diid I miss anything interesting?
  • FU Boy
You only missed the inevitable.   There may be a march later today.

Beyond that, I'm wondering what to have for lunch.
  • Fucking Napoleonic little bastard...
  • Occupy Wall St. - "NYPD have raided the Occupy Wall Street camp in Zuccotti Park, tossing tents, tarps, pallets, sleeping bags and 5,554 books into dump trucks."- Seriously? NYC Schoolkids are in make shift classrooms, with little to no supplies and books, and this mayor decides to trash over 5000 books and other supplies people could USE??!! not to mention all the money his "raid" cost  (helicopters, 'sound cannons', hundreds of cops, shutting down mass transit, etc etc) - and taxpayers have to pay the price for his Decision (he said at the press conference "The decision was solely mine"- HE SHOULD BE MADE TO PICK UP THE TAB FOR HIS DECISION.
  • Gilberto even if that were possible Bloomberg could spare a few hundred million without blinking
  • He may have made the decision, but that doesn't mean the decision was his to make. Force is the recourse of animals.
  • That pretty much sums up human history
  • v4der
    END THE LOCKOUT!!!
  • splicernyc
Maybe Ray Kelly can put the eviction videos in his mayoral campaign commercials. I'm sure he'll win Staten Island.
  • I think that is a foregone conclusion (Kelly winning Staten Island)
  • jibbly
Ugh, anyone who was around for Bloomberg's first term already knew this was inevitable. That motherfucker loves to let loose his NYPD attack dogs on protests.
  • GalBklyn
    M.Mike:

You may have won the battle. But you just lost the war.

  • glxglx
There's no war that he's engaged in.  He's filthy rich.  He's not seeking a fourth term.  Check-mate.
  • Because being filthy rich means you are victorious right?
  • EdwardAmame
Unless you're Mayor Mike or a member of his immediate family, your gloating appears pretty idiotic.
  • No, but he will be seeking the presidency, and will go down a' la Guilliani, in a puff of bullshit.
  • GalBklyn
no - but his ego is paper thin and he craves power and control.

and I'm sure his 'legacy' is on his mind 24/7. Or what is left of it. He sees this as a war (why else has Kelly and the goons mobbed up in the past ten years).

fourth term/filthy rich matters not to a guy like Mike. But he needs to feel that he is better then those around him. Thus, i'm not sorry in the least - to see him lose this war.
  • xXxMExXx
Great job by the NYPD. Perfectly executed. I'm proud of you guys.
  • Yeah buddy! Way to go Police State!
  • Please make sure to keep everyone updated as to where all the money in their "war chest" goes to.  I am sure it will be stuffing the pockets of AdBusters in Canada in T-Minus 10.....

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR CLEANING OUT THIS TRASH FROM ZUCOTTI PARK!  GOD AND SCIENCE BLESS THE NYPD, GOD AND SCIENCE BLESS MAYOR BLOOMBERG!!!
  • The trash? It is narrow minded thinkers like you that keep the masses oppressed. The trash? To whom do you refer sir? The downtrodden and stepped upon who have no place else to turn but protest? The trash good man? If those who are exercising their rights to be counted are the trash:? Then we are all in big trouble in this country. They are the heroes and you sir are just a useless cog in the machine if the Occupy Movement Members are the TRASH to you.
  • They are not heroes.  They are puppets.  Fueled by internet speculation and gossip, feeling entitled after being spoiled growing up and looking for something better to do than work or go to school and claim they are being part of a revolution.

Once the final tear gas canisters are set off and the final downtrodden hippie is clubbed, none of them will be heros.
  • schmeep
Anyone notice that it appears that conservatives/anti OWS commenters were up at the crack of dawn spewing negativity?  As I don't think that the posters make more money than any of the liberals and working so early, I'm wondering if the ego dystonia of supporting a machine that works against them is causing restless nights.
  • Detex
I am far from a conservative but I am pretty tired of OWS and their solution-less bullshit. Yes, I was up to go to work.
  • EdwardAmame
Americans have the right to peaceably assemble for the redress of grievances. OWS is not about providing solutions. It is about shouting about the theft of America's wealth and political system. The shouts are being heard. And that's why the hijacking plutocrats want 'em shut down.
  • Detex
The shouts are being heard and dismissed because there is not suggestion of how to fix the problem. That is all I want, a suggestion on what should be done.
  • The whole point of the movement it so collectively brainstorm "the next move" with regard to fixing the terrible predicament within most people now find themselves. Of course they wouldn't have arrived with one ready-made solution.
  • Detex
You have had 60 days to come up with "the next move." this is the problem, it is getting old and costing us (the taxpayers of NYC) a lot of money.
  • xXxMExXx
It is probably a foreign concept to you, so I can understand how you might be confused; but the 99% of us whom aren't protesting are up in the morning getting ready for work.
  • EdwardAmame
Nice job missing the point, shill.
  • Detex
Nah, pretty sure he was spot on. What you were implying is that liberals don't work as hard and they also would never work for "the man." You my friend have a lot to learn. We come from all walks of life. Just because we have jobs and care about them does not make us conservatives or Rush fans!
  • EdwardAmame
You've missed his point too, I made no such point and you've apparently STILL missed the entire point of OWS.

The Soviets had a very derogatory term for their sympathizers in western countries.  Don't think the top .1% are appreciating your efforts on their behalf either.
  • We were up because we had jobs to go to.
  • pendejito
I got a job too Rodger and probably make more money than you, but you know what, when my country is fucked financially and politcally, I tend to care. Just because I have a job, vacations, and own property doesn't mean I'm cool with crooks committing crimes and getting away with it at the tax payers expense.

Caring, you should try it sometime.
  • LETS GO PAYCHECK FOR PAYCHECK RIGHT NOW.
  • aloveston
    So do I.

    I support OWS.
  • Must stink to have to be rooting for a losing team.
  • aloveston
We'll talk again in a week.  Every time Bloomberg does something this stupid, the movement redoubles.

This isn't about teams, Rodger.  It's about the growing inequality between classes here.  But you must already know that and don't care.
  • seattlesnow
    then go back to Iowa
  • aloveston
Born & raised in the East Village.
  • latb
Redoubles? There were a grand total of 200 people staying in the park last night (according to the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11....
Considering that there are over 8 million people in the city perhaps they ought to be chanting "We are the 0.0025%!"
  • aloveston
Yes, redoubles.  The movement gained momentum (both in the national media and in physical number of people down there) and spread around the country the last time Bloomberg marched on them, and I expect a similar outcome.
  • Can you pelase stop calling it a movement.  It should be referred to as "Ad Buster's Fall Campaign"  A movement is something that happened in Egypt or Syria that was started by the people.  Not by a company.

Next up is Occupy Wall Street: Sponsored By Pepsi
  • EdwardAmame
Oh bullshit. This is absolutely a grassroots effort.
  • Is Not.
  • latb
Oh? Proof please? Make sure you include *direct causality,* since that's what you're claiming.

And "marched on them?" What incident are you referring to, specifically? I remember that about 200 (according to wikipedia citing the daily news) the same amount as remained camped in the park yesterday, btw, not half as many) protesters marched through the FiDi and got into some scuffles, but I'd hardly call what happened that night Bloomberg "marching on them," though there were some bad things that happened (i.e. that poor guy who got run over).

Here is Siena's most recent NYS poll: http://www.siena.edu/uploadedf... taken before last night's incident, which is useful because we can use it to prove or disprove your assumption directly the next time one comes out (usual survey caveats apply of course)

For all your claims about the movement "doubling" here it seems pretty clear that favorability is trending downwards as is the number of people who identify with the "occupiers."

Here are the more specific cross tabs for that poll: http://www.siena.edu/uploadedf...
  • latb
btw, there is a new poll coming out from democrat-aligned PPP tomorrow, will be an interesting exercise to look at the numbers.
  • latb
And here it is: support for Occupy is not building, it's cratering: http://www.publicpolicypolling...
  • It's actually more about AdBuster's FABULOUS new fall ad campaign in which they convince the disenchanted of the US to form little groups and beat drums all day while the money warchest gets bigger and once something like this happens, all the money gets dumped into their coffers.

Read a book rather than what you read on the internet.
  • aloveston
I'm reading a great one right now: Embassytown by China Mieville.

Then, I think, it'll be on to David Mitchell's newest.
  • God and Science Bless You, Mayor Bloomberg!
  • EdwardAmame
You left out Wall Street Rodger.
  • You're 100% right!

GOD AND SCIENCE BLESS WALL STREET AS WELL!
  • glxglx
Hot damn, get this man a 4th term!
  • Temple Spencer
    Hilarious!
  • EdwardAmame
Fat f*cking chance, you really are a dead ender.
  • glxglx
what the fuck is a dead ender?  also, you can type fuck here.  fuck fuck fuck.
  • antimisogynycrusader
    The 0.01% speaks....
  • pete_mac
So the NYP first attacked the media (or anyone else with a camera,) then didn't allow them in the area because they wanted to protect them? Wow.
  • shocktheday
Bloomberg should have let it fizzle out, now he's stirred up a hornet's nest.  Idiot.
  • FU Boy
Or he should have waited for a better excuse than this.
  • theevilerone
I think if he had done this a month ago, it would stir up a hornet's nest. Since then, I don't OWS is perceived as having made any forward progress and therefore are viewed as "just" an encampment. I could be totally wrong, but I think the uproar is going to be fairly mild.
  • matteus
I sort of agree with you althouh I still haven't been down there.. but if the NYPD and Bloomy have to be so blatantly corrupt in their actions, then there really is a problem with our system. The OWS don't have to do anything but let these tools fume and expose their own idiocy.
  • EdwardAmame
I doubt the "cleaning" would have occurred if the folks calling the shots here perceived there was "no forward progress being made."
  • EdwardAmame
You are correct, except that I don't think it was gonna fizzle out anytime soon.
  • EdwardAmame
Oh I don't think the decision was yours alone, Mike. And just yesterday morning I thought Paul Krugman was being a little melodramatic.

    Panic of the Plutocrats
It remains to be seen whether the Occupy Wall Street protests will change America’s direction. Yet the protests have already elicited a remarkably hysterical reaction from Wall Street, the super-rich in general, and politicians and pundits who reliably serve the interests of the wealthiest hundredth of a percent...
  • They're not panicking. Puking, maybe.
  • Weren't you one another article claiming how five of your friends were raped at Zuccutti Park? If true, very sad. But to see you take this stance on this article, I suppose it is safe to say you are blogging for a particular cause. Mayors Office much?
  • whitecastlerock
    Bloomberg is scum...
  • Bloomberg is the best, finally someone who works for us!
  • matteus
congrats on being a tool: does "no right is absolute" mean ANYTHING?
  • Please move the fuck back to idaho.
  • nycpwt
Ok Jan. You get the troll of the day award. Happy now?
  • SpideySense
Us? Then you must be the CEO of a big corporation.
  • Detex
Nope. I am in the middle on Bloomberg, he has done a lot of good for the city and has also made some calls I don't agree with. Either way, I think he is better than anyone else who ran against him and I would take him any day in front of RUDY.
  • pendejito
Detex, I will have to respectfully disagree. You can't possibly be in the middle on someone who changed election laws to run a third term, and then had the audacity to vote against them after winning a third term.

Its not class warfare (99% vs 1%), its dilluting democracy. This goes far above any hippy vs fat cat arguments.
  • Detex
you are correct, he is two faced in many ways. most/all politicians generally are. All I am saying is that I think he has done a far better job than Rudy and I am not sure we had a good choice other than him anyway.

So yes, I am in the middle.
