Last Chance To Get To Windsor Terrace On Public Transportation!

The continuing hell that is F and G train service around Brownstone Brooklyn continues, starting this weekend lasting into, basically, eternity. So if you've ever wanted to explore Windsor Terrace with the magic public transportation, do it now, while you still can.

Here are the details: starting tonight at midnight and continuing through 5am Monday, there will be no F trains between Jay St-MetroTech and 18th Ave, and no G trains between Hoyt-Schermerhorn and Church Ave, though there will be (surprisingly fast!) shuttle buses.

That's all well and good, but the real drama happens Monday morning, when the southbound platforms at Fort Hamilton and 15th St/Prospect Park will be closed, until a vague "spring 2012." All commuters will either have to walk home from an alterante station or double-back from the Church Avenue stop, which some residents feel is "is incredibly dangerous given the recent string of sexual attacks" in the area.

Windsor Terrace Blog reports that the local precincts have agreed to increase their presence, particularly during the darker evening hours, but even if it's safe, it's still a pain in the ass: "It’s an inconvenience to people and it’s definitely going to affect peoples quality of life,” Gary Reilly, a member of the Community Board 6 Transportation Committee told the Brooklyn Paper. “If the MTA had some better resources, they could provide a shuttle bus to replace the services that were lost.”

The work being done is part of the $275.5 million project to rehabilitate the nearly century-old Culver Viaduct nearby. In the immortal words of the MTA: PLEASE BE PATIENT!

    You want water? Then, you have to risk getting mugged.

    Meanwhile, MTA execs shuttle between home and work in private automobiles. But, this has no impact on MTA planning of public transportation projects. Absolutely none.

    I live a couple of doors down from MTA head Joe Lhota, and he rides the subway to/from work. I see him all the time.

  • A viaduct is an elevated vehicle transport overpass over a body of water, an aqueduct is what moves water over head...  You do realize that the work has been necessary for years? The viaduct is close to a hundred years old and pieces of it have started falling off.  It's been becoming structurally compromised for decades, creating the real danger of it collapsing, most likely with trains going over it.  So you wanna have the risk of falling to your death in the Gowanus Canal?  It had to be done sometime.
    The MTA announced this project almost four years ago.

    How efficient is it to do track work during wintertime? Surely it could have been better for people to wait for Spring.
