Occupy Wall Street Plans To Stay Forever With 15 New Bike-Powered Generators

Fifteen newly built bicycle-powered generators are helping to power the movement at Occupy Wall Street. After the FDNY and NYPD seized generators and biofuels citing a fire hazard, clever and resourceful occupiers, with the help of Pedal Power NYC and Time's Up!, have developed a green and sustainable way to solve their energy needs. Though the confiscated generators were returned to protesters last night, winter's approach ensures that those living in Zuccotti Park will need all the power they can muster.

Should the gas-powered generators be taken away again, the protesters will be prepared. Old stationary bikes have been retrofitted with components that link to 12 volt batteries which are used throughout the park to charge laptops, cell phones, cameras, and small kitchen appliances. "Bikes are powered by human energy and we have plenty of that down here," said 26-year-old Lauren Minis. "The idea is that each area—Comfort, Medical, Media, the kitchen—will get their own bike so they can be self-sufficient. We also need to get our free wifi back which has been down since the police took our generators." Minis, originally from Staten Island, had been working for a sustainable living center in Oakland, CA before joining the sustainability working group at Occupy Wall Street.

Demonstrators at Occupy Boston shipped the first of the generators to New York, but volunteers are working off-site to build dozens more and many occupiers expect the idea to spread to other cities across the country. One of the biggest concerns voiced by those staffing the medical tent is avoiding cold-weather maladies such as hypothermia. "I think this is genius on so many levels," said one rather impressed passerby. "It'll keep them warm! And this movement is about giving power back to the people, and here they are literally creating it themselves."

Power isn't the only resource in demand at Zuccotti Park. Space is scarce and members of OWS Town Planning went tent-to-tent last week administering a census. Following the freak snowstorm on October 29th, signs appeared on tents indicating its occupation status and the number of people sleeping there each night. "A lot of people left after the storm," said Marsha Spencer (AKA the OWS Knitter). "People were freezing and need somewhere to sleep. They needed to know if any tents had been abandoned so someone could use them," she said while knitting a pink wool skirt for a woman who had been there since September 17. "I've made over 50 items so far. Lots of hats gloves, and now this skirt. I have one I wear in the winter and it will really keep her legs warm." Hopefully that skirt will come with a matching sweater set and a beard hat!

  • Typical alternators use a rotating field winding excited with direct
current, and a stationary (stator) winding that produces alternating
current. Since the rotor field only requires a tiny fraction of the
power generated by the machine, the brushes for the field contact can be
relatively small. In the case of a brushless exciter, no brushes are
used at all and the rotor shaft carries rectifiers to excite the main
    field winding.

Love it, love it, love it! OWS forever! Let's not only permanently occupy, but transform the spaces we occupy into centers for sustainability! http://www.occupy-wallstreet.c...

The lass on the bike is cuuute! Why couldn't this movement come 5 years ago when I was young and free as a bird? Damn this monogamy stance of mine...
  • ed_Ex2
It takes 6 hours for a bike to recharge a car battery which only utilizes that power for 4 hours: you can recharge cell phones, tablets, computers and basic things, but using this method for heat and and light, all winter is useless. The bottom line is, they need diesel generators to heat the military-grade canvas tents which by the way, will still be cold (no insulation.)

As for lighting, I'm quite surprised that with the over $750,000 worth of cash donations for OWS, that no one has utilized solar panels or just plain batteries for lighting fixtures; LEDs go a long way on little power. Also, if it was me sleeping in the park (which it isn't,) I would be finding a public library to recharge any device I had instead of looking for more handouts.

I have spent some of my free time down at Zuccotti Park. Not as a demonstrator or protester, but as an observer—photo journalism. I have found, which isn't hard to see, three major divisions of the park which are divided like this: 1. The most eastern part of the park from Broadway to the New Medical Tent is an area of fairly decent social order, organization, and cleanliness. 2. The Medical Tent, Segregated Women's Area, and the Kitchen is "Midtown" which is fairly safe, fairly clean, and somewhat organized. 3. The last area, from the edge of the Make-shift Kitchen to Trinity Place is chaotic, dirty, and completely unorganized; many of its inhabitants, from what the (unnamed) OWS organizers have told me are people who need a place to crash: drug addicts, criminals, etc. and If you go down there (and walk inside the park) you will see exactly that—a summer camp for the delusional.

The Park's owners, Brookfield Office Properties, are allowing this encampment. The second they "pull the plug," which can be any day, the park will be swiftly vacated, probably with force. If you "occupy" my front lawn what happens? I call the authorities and have you removed which would probably result in aggression from you and the police, it's a natural reaction to ending an occupation. A great example to this, and completely unrelated politically, is when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) forcibly removed every Jewish family and Jewish person from Gaza in 2005, the IDF then fully left the area and it's now controlled by Hamas, not Egypt, its original owner(s).

My point is, there's nothing in the US Constitution that allows you to occupy private property, in fact, quite the contrary. I'd be much more impressed and perhaps more involved, if OWS occupied a true public space owned by the city, state, or federal government. Here are some parks in the area to consider for this occupation: Hudson River Park (NYS), Battery Park (NYC),  City Hall Park (NYC), West Thames Park (NYC), Rector Park (NYC), Union Square Park (NYC), Castle Clinton National Monument (USA).

NOOOOOOOOOOO.  Stop focusing on finding ways to render a public park unusable for everyone else for LONGER, start getting to the point so you can go HOME.
  • rnrnys
Wow, bike powered generators!  That's better than a gym membership.

Can we get Michael Moore on one?  Think of the power he could generate!!!!

I can't wait to watch the photos of these assholes in the middle of winter. Guess I'll just cozy up to my monitor in a fuzzy sweater and a steaming cup of hot chocolate.

    Testify Brother Greg!
  • votersofny
These dopes are walking to DC? I knew they were stupid but I didn't think they were total retards. This gets funnier every day.

Did they leave enough people to 'guard' the fort? Aren't they afraid that the enemy will overrun them with such a small force guarding the park? Hope a bunch of gang members don't attack at night. Ha ha ha.

Maybe big bad Mayor Blowme will use this opprtunity to take back the park. Probably not, the little effing weasal doesn't have any balls.

Maybe the fire department will decide that those tents are fire traps. I can't wait for the morons to come back from their pilgrimage to DC. Effing jerks.
  • Inkognita
You don't like anyone, do you?
  • votersofny
Sure I do. I did all kinds of jobs since I was a teen. I served my country during VietNam, got married, raised kids, got some grandkids, made lots of friends, bought a house, saved my money for retirement which is what I do now.

One thing I NEVER did was try to steal money that other people earned. I never tried to get someone else's money because they had more than I did.

I never broke the law by taking over someone's property, caused local businesses to lose money, pissed or crapped on the sidewalk, threatened people walking on the street.

Yeah, I like a lot of people but not filthy, dirty, hippy leeches.
  • Inkognita
Good for you!  But your anger is largely misplaced.  It should be directed towards the elected officials, business leaders and others whose greed and indifference brought us to where we are today.

The world has changed considerably since you were striving to achieve your American dream.  For example, when the Vietnam war ended the unemployment rate was around 8%, but today unemployment is 12% (an increase of 50%).  The housing situation has been similarly negatively impacted (just ask your kids and maybe grand kids).

You may not be aware of it, but many of the OWS protesters are veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq.  Are there crackpots out there?  Absolutely, and OWS-NYC, unlike other cities, seems to be a magnet for nuts from all over the country (and the organizers at Zuccotti need to deal effectively and quickly with that problem).  But that is not to say that the OWS protesters don't have an important message to convey. How well OWS is able to organize itself and move ahead from here remains to be seen.

Yes, you worked hard for what you have, but whether or not you realize it, you were also enabled in no small measure by a more favorable economy which simply doesn't exist today.

Really..how long are we going to have to put up with this crap for?  They don't even have demands...they're just annoying and pointless...like the taint...
  • Peanut_Butter
    "worthless squatters"

    IS THERE ANOTHER KIND?
  • The fact this is still going on with no formal end in sight clearly means not enough crazies have been sent there.  I know I'll be sending all the homeless people in my neighberhood there.  I'm going to start posting signs.
  • Inkognita
You live in a neighborhood with a lot of homeless people?  Maybe you should consider moving to a better neighborhood instead of just posting signs.
  • Inkognita
I like the look of those beard hats.  Where can you get them?  Is OWS selling them?

Kudos to Occupy Boston for shipping the first of those bicycle-powered generators to NYC!  I'm glad to hear some good news coming out of Zuccotti Park for a change. Too many crazies seem to have moved in there lately.
  • shut up you liberal c**k loving hippie i hope you all get the flu and perish i hate you all and everything you stand for everytime any of you open your mouths its like endless crap just spewing out with no control.

I thought those generators ran on the OWS folks' sense of self-satisfaction? (kidding)
  • Gothamist_Cynic
Is that Jennifer Connelly on that bike?
  • jisnotused
sshe can ride on my generator
  • Peanut_Butter
Agreed.  She's kinda cute.  If I go down there (to Zuccotti Park), will I see her?  Might have to rethink my position on OWS.
  • They paid her to sit on the bike. There are no females at OWS-- only "female-bodied" people.
  • ktinnyc
Nobody cares about a 30 second ride. These people need lots of energy!
  • Rock on.
  • no not rock on these people are so stupid and lazy and retarted its getting so out of control i hate these commie losers and everything they stand for god they are all a bunch of college know it all hippies who went to expensive colleges for some retarted degree and spent like 50,000 dollars or maybe more and got a poetry degree or a liberal arts degree or a journalism degree when their writing sucks no wonder they cant pay off their college loans much less find a job wow what f***tards
  • @greg - Someone who can't spell "retarded" (or who thinks it's trenchant to even use the term in the first place) doesn't really have any room to criticize how others write.  #CoolStoryBro
  • nntogo
You just won everyone over with your mile long run-on sentence.
  • BoogieDown
You know what else a college education may get you?  An ability to understand how to properly use punctuation.

  • benjoya
"inventive" as in "creating something that doesn't exist," agreed.

Throw on some clipless pedals, drop/aero bars and a way to measure power output and I bet they could get a bunch of roadies to show up.

  • Has the OWS accomplished anything yet??  All I hear about is civil disobedience and smelly hippies ruining downtown.  Step up and make some changes or go home.  So far you just sound like little bitches who want government hand outs like the hood rats already get.  get your resume up to date and get a job.  stop hating people who have money.  i am not rich and never will but i get up and do something positive every day to create progress in my life.  OWS is scum so far.  get a leader with a message or the majority of the public can never agree with you.  if you think these stupid pols mean anything your wrong.  OWS as a group can't run for government.  that is all for now.  OWS stinks
  • bupkus
    Hi Jimmy
you sound like a productive member.
Here's a website you can learn about what's going on, down at Zuccotti Park.
    http://www.nycga.net/
I know making up sh*t has become the American way, if you aren't able to figure something out, by just reading the NY Post.
So you'll be surprised about the amount of productive and constructive things going on. Hopefully reading and learning aren't against your views.
  • i dont care to read that garbage but thanks.  i can see progress my self and i don't see any.  have a nice winter .  hope to see some lost limbs this year for christmas
