HopStop, the ever-useful website that helps folks route their best subway and bus routes in various cities, has now rolled out an option for parents and caregivers—and anyone else hauling a stroller—to find the most stroller-friendly routes. You can check the box for "Stroller Friendly" (it's also "Wheelchair Accessible"), which means getting a route that involves more walking and fewer stairs and, if possible, more elevators.

For instance, when mapping our usual work subway commute route, HopStop recommends a transfer at 14th Street from the 1/2/3 to the F. But everyone knows that the transfer is a long warren of many sets of stairs. When selecting the "Stroller Friendly" version, HopStop recommends staying on the 1/2/3 and just hoofing it. Cue the inevitable etiquette question: If you give up your seat for pregnant women, does that mean you are obligated to help people carry strollers up stairs? And if you do opt for a bus, remember you're supposed to fold up the stroller!

HopStop also offers this as an option on its smartphone app. Now, if only HopStop can figure out how many calories are burned by carrying the kid in the stroller up and down the subway station stairs...

While I realize the use of the term "breeder" may be en vogue in some circles, it is roughly the equivalent of calling someone a "fag" or a "heeb".

    Double standard?

  • Trustafarian

    it is?

  • Yeah, I have a kid and I'm not remotely offended by "breeder." Of course, I don't expect everyone to treat me and the little guy like we're special because I reproduced either.

See, you learn all kinds of interesting stuff on Gothamist.  Two weeks ago, one of the trolls informed me that the phrase white thrash was the same as nigga

  • That's why I just take the kid in the carrier when I use the subway. The stroller is a pain in the ass for me and for other riders in the subway.

And no, I don't think anyone is obligated to help with strollers. I mean, it's a nice thing to do, but it's not Generic Commuter's fault that somebody chose to lug their Bugaboo into the subway.

  • Totally agree about the carrier—so much easier than the stroller on subway or bus! But if I need to use the stroller, I'll use the umbrella one. I can't imagine lugging a huge stroller around by myself—plus the squirming baby.
