Poor NJ Transit Commuters: Downed Wire Causes 30-60 Minute Delays

Earlier this year, NJ Transit riders had a fare hike. Of course, since then, there have been numerous problems plaguing the system, from power issues that leave passengers stranded in the tunnel near Penn Station to derailments. Today, a wire fell near Metuchen around 7:40 a.m., causing 30-60 minute delays.

According to WABC 7, "Approximately 700 passengers were evacuated from one commuter train. New Jersey Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. says the 11-car train came to a stop in Metuchen on its way to New York City around 7:40 a.m... The downed wire is causing delays of up to 60 minutes on the busy Northeast Corridor line between Trenton and Princeton Junction."

Riders have been taking to Twitter: "Funny how #njtransit changes express trains into local trains at their whim. Wait, it's not funny. Did I mention I pay $414/month to ride?" (chris_ackermann) and "Nothing like rolling into the office at the crack of 10 am. Thanks #NJTransit. #IPayForThis?" (NHLAdamK). Also, "My landlord came back from China & Korea. I asked him about how the trains compare to NJTransit. He laughed. More than casually" (nsjersey).

America does not see maintaining infrastructure as immediately profitable, so it doesn't happen.  Disaster management only.

Aww poor babies. Wishing for that 3rd rail aren't ya?

  • Actually, the fare hike wasn't earlier this year, it was May 2010.

Of course that's an Amtrak wire, and there's also the concept of "shit happens" that must be applied to commuting.
