Panini Shop Owner Says Occupy Wall Street Protesters Are Tormenting Her

You may recall Stacey Tzortzatos from her cameo on The Daily Show last month, in which she told of her ordeal operating the Panini & Co. sandwich shop next door to the Occupy Wall Street encampment at Zuccotti Park. She claims her restroom sink was damaged and a toilet clogged, and now she's back in the news—er, the NY Post, which just loooves their stories about dirty hippie demonstrators terrorizing the decent working class folks.

"I’ve been told, ‘Watch your back!’ 10 times,” Tzortzatos tells the tabloid. "I have the police in here 10 times a day, [and] I’m the bouncer. I’ve been called the spawn of the devil. It’s unbelievable what goes on in here every day." She claims damage to the bathroom set her back $3,000, and after she put up a sign saying the restroom was for customers only, a protester tore it down. And this one other time, an occupier came in with a ten gallon jug of water and demanded that she fill it up. When she refused, she says "he banged it on the ground and started yelling... He said he was entitled to have it for free."

Occupy Wall Street has tried to reduce the strain on local businesses by setting up three 24-hour porta potties several blocks from the park on Friday. But DNAinfo reports that as of yesterday, many occupiers didn't know they existed, and others chose not to use them. "I use a street corner, a telephone pole," 22-year-old protester Terrence Hubbard says. "I did it a couple of times in my tent when I was lazy. Otherwise, I go to McDonald's." Another protester, Amanda Funaro, 20, says, "Everybody was happy about it, but I still use McDonald's because it's close and I like to use a real toilet." Anyway, it beats using that devil toilet in the panini shop.

Two sides of the same coin: "I'm entitled to the use of your facilities and water."
"I helped run my place of employment into the ground and wreck the economy, so I'm entitled to a million dollar bonus at tax-payer expense." However, the corporate welfare queen dresses nicely,,,

Is it unlawful to ban unkempt/smelly people from your establishment?

Were I the Panini Lady- I would board-up my storefront- yet continue to make an abreviated selection of Panini Sandwichs and drinks-  which I would sell OUTSIDE and infront of my boarded-up storefront with the assistance of a security guard or two!
This too- will pass. . . It's just that the fates allowed that this OWS 'snowball' landed on this unfortunate businesswoman's venue.

smelly OWS hippies ... jobless , hopeless

  • According to the Daily Rash, Ron Paul made an appearance at the Occupy Wall Street demonstration and handed out LSD to the protesters. Maybe this woman's problems were caused by Ron Paul? http://www.thedailyrash.com/ro...

  • Finally something good comes out of this protest.

  • bigtimegeek

And more on-topic, this shop owner has every right to be pissed off and complain. I love how Gothamist sneers at the NY Post reports as if she's just making this stuff up.

  • bggb

The problem isn't with this woman's complaints. It's how this incident is used by people who are opposed to OWS (the NY Post) in order to divide and discredit support OWS might otherwise gain.

It's a failure, yet again, to take on OWS on actual issues, not quality of life b.s. that in no way represents the majority of people down there or their goals.

    Drumming.
    A rape.
Mean people asking for the bathroom.

None of it deals with actual political discussion.

  • The only way this movement can get any attention is by annoying as many people as possible. That is their goal. That's the reason for the drum circles, the rapes, and the blocking of pedestrians on their way to real events/parties/jobs/appointments.

  • nunyadamn

I'll accept your premise that the drums & blocking people are in order to be intrusive. But are you seriously accusing the Occupiers of committing rape in order to annoy people?

  • FU Boy

But it's what the movement is mired in - it's what they're forced to deal with because they've decided an occupation is the best way to protest.

It will always be a drain of resources, financially and conversationally, and people who wish to discredit the movement will have an easy target to do so.

  • bggb

It's not mired in it all. The various issues continue to be dealt with (drumming: limited hours; a rape: safe spaces project and police contact; bathrooms: city finally let them get portapotties), meanwhile, the working groups (where the real progress is made) continue, as well as ongoing efforts at community outreach to bridge the gap between those brought together by OWS and those who have been fighting these battles in various communities for a long time.

Trying to undermine OWS by talking about bathrooms is like trying to undermine President Obama because his father wasn't born in the US.

It plays with people who are predetermined to remain ignorant, but it's complete avoidance of discussing actual issues.

  • FU Boy

Well, agreed on the idiocy of attacking it on these issues alone and using avoidance / redirection tactics to avoid a dialogue.  But that's not going to stop detractors from using those tactics.

It worked on Obama, who finally caved into mouthpieces and said "Fine, here's my birth certificate!" when it was really an idiotic non-issue that should have been ignored.

  • bigtimegeek

There is anger and hate over OWS everywhere, not just NYC. There are plenty of forward-minded thinking people all over the country who can't stand these tactics either. Even in SF and Oakland-- home of the liberal elite-- support is far from widespread.

What bothers me the most is that it's become a point of division between moderate liberals (like myself and many of my friends) and the radical liberals (some of my other friends) who are blindly supporting this, like they do anything anti-establishment. It's making left-leaning people distance themselves from the far-left and weakening any hope we have of standing together on some of these issues. These kinds of tactics are just as bad as anything the far-right has done, even worse in some ways. It all seems very immature.

Take it easy big man. "moderate liberals" aka "Obama liberals" have accepted many policies that are no different than what a typical Republican would want.

Don't fault progressives and radicals for not toeing Obama's weak line.

Considering how much she complains, maybe the name calling is warranted. I mean, that one bathroom incident she keeps talking about happened weeks ago.
